Miami, Florida –In honor of the 1000 Miglia Experience USA Florida, February 20-23 with start and finish in Miami, Barovier&Toso and Pininfarina unveiled an exclusive trophy, an iconic object conceived as both a design and symbolic gesture. The piece translates into form the founding values of the event: precision, motion, memory, and vision.

“We are honored to collaborate with two legends such as Pininfarina and Barovier&Toso on a trophy that captures the essence of the Red Arrow, a dialogue between design, craftsmanship, and competition. This object transforms speed and precision into a timeless form, forged in Venetian Crystal, to celebrate the teams that best embody the spirit of the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida,” said Massimo Cicatiello, President of EGA EVENTS USA. Ega Worldwide is the Official Licensee and Organizer of the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida.

The trophy was designed by Pininfarina, a leader in timeless design, and handcrafted by Barovier&Toso, the historic Venetian glassmaker that has shaped the art of glass for over seven centuries.

1000 Miglia Experience Florida

The project originates from a foundation of automotive design. The reference to the wooden radiator shells of early racing cars is not a literal citation, but rather a nod to the methodology of carving, subtracting, and defining volumes. This approach, both archaic and deeply modern, is reinterpreted by Pininfarina through its design language, transforming a functional element into a refined form with dynamic tension.

The result is a sculptural composition that is precise and balanced. The form emerges from control of the material. The object becomes a tribute to heritage and innovation, perfectly aligned with the spirit of the 1000 Miglia Experience.

“The trophy distills our design philosophy into a sculptural gesture shaped by motion, balance, and emotion. Inspired by a mascherone, the piece represents a dialogue between past and present—a historical reference reinterpreted through a contemporary language,” said Paolo Trevisan, Senior Vice President of Design at Pininfarina of America. “Through our collaboration with the renowned Barovier&Toso, craftsmanship and design converge to transform the spirit of the 1000 Miglia into a timeless symbol of performance and tradition.”

Trophies will be awarded to the winners of the following categories:

– 1000 Miglia Original Car Class
– Classic Icons Car Class
– Hyper-Car & Super-Car Class

Each element is handmade in the Barovier&Toso furnaces in Murano.

“It is a great honor for Barovier&Toso to collaborate with 1000 Miglia and Pininfarina in creating an object destined to represent an event of such international importance. This partnership is rooted in a shared trust in the values of Italian excellence, design rigor, and artisanal craftsmanship. Being part of this dialogue means contributing, through Venetian Crystal, to a narrative that unites design culture, competition, and memory,” said Fabio Pelosini, Regional Manager Americas for Barovier&Toso.

The trophy is a point of convergence among three Italian excellences:
the design expertise of Pininfarina, distilling aerodynamics and motion into an iconic form;
the centuries-old mastery of Barovier&Toso, translating molten material into works of light since 1295; and the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida, an event that extends the legend of the Red Arrow onto an international stage while preserving its values, style, and competitive spirit.

Each piece is accompanied by an official certificate of authenticity, attesting to its uniqueness, handcrafted nature, and exclusive creation for the 1000 Miglia Experience USA Florida 2026—sealing a project that transcends the concept of an award to stand as a testament.

LOS ANGELES and TURIN, Italy, CNW – The Automobili Pininfarina Battista will take center stage in a new exhibition at the world famous Petersen Museum in California celebrating 90 years of peerless Italian car design and featuring iconic Pininfarina-designed models that have inspired the pure-electric hyper GT.

“The Aesthetic of Motoring: 90 Years of Pininfarina” exhibition will pay tribute to nine decades of design leadership and includes some of the earliest Pininfarina models, up to the inception of Automobili Pininfarina and the design and production of the all-new Battista.

In 2018, Automobili Pininfarina was created to fulfill Battista ‘Pinin’ Farina’s dream of developing and producing a stand-alone range of Pininfarina-branded cars. The first of these vehicles, presented in early 2019, is the pure-electric Battista hyper GT – the most powerful road-legal car ever designed and produced in Italy. Just 150 will be created and, like many of those iconic Pininfarina designs from the past, each will be individually hand-crafted at the Pininfarina SpA atelier in Turin, Italy.

Sitting at the heart of the exhibition is one of the original design models from 2019. It delivers the vision of the new business and shows how its design has been influenced by, and pays tribute to some of those historic models positioned close by.

Luca Borgogno, Chief Design Officer, Automobili Pininfarina, said: “The new Battista hyper GT is a unique design with beautiful detailing inspired by nine decades of design excellence, befitting the most powerful Italian car ever made. The unrivalled heritage of Pininfarina has allowed us to look back for inspiriration and honour some of the revolutionary vehicles of the past, to create an icon for the future. This exhibition gives visitors a unique opportunity to see how the future of electric luxury performance has learned from the lessons of the past and to appreciate the timeless quality of exceptional design first hand.”

Alongside the new Battista are legendary designs from Pininfarina’s past. These include a 1931 Cadillac Model 452A Boattail Roadster, the first Pininfarina body mounted on a non-Italian chassis, and a 1947 Cisitalia 202 coupe, famed for its sleek aerodynamics and regarded as revolutionary in its design. The quartet of design icons is completed by a 1966 Dino Berlinetta 206 GT Prototype – the first mid-engine Ferrari. This will be replaced with a 1967 Ferrari 365P Berlinetta Speciale “Tre Posti,” the last vehicle bodied by Pininfarina for a private client.

The exhibition will also dive deeper into some of the incredible achievements and key moments over the past 90 years of Pininfarina history, stretching all the way back to 1930. It also highlights the ongoing family lineage, starting with the original coachbuilders, right through to the creation of the Automobili Pininfarina business back in 2018.

Story and photos by Angelo Van Bogart

Not even rain or the threat of it could dampen what was essentially the ultimate Cadillac experience. There were presentations by current and former Cadillac staff and designers and chances to rub elbows with them — rides in vintage Cadillacs (a 1955 Coupe deVille or a 1980s Maloney stretch limousine) — old and new Cadillac concept cars (including the very first and very last Cadillac two-door hardtop prototypes) — a display of new vehicles by Cadillac — a garage sale of Cadillac and LaSalle-related items by the museum — a concours field of beautiful restored and survivor-quality Cadillacs and LaSalles — tours — and eight museums to visit on the Gilmore Car Museum campus in Hickory Corners, Mich.

All of these incredible opportunities and more were crunched into four days of the Cadillac & LaSalle Museum & Research Center’s (CLCMRC) annual Fall Festival & Concours d’Elegance held Sept, 26-29 at the CLCMRC.

One of the principals behind the “Fall Festival” is Old Cars “Resto Basics” columnist William “Bill” Anderson, who serves as president and chairman of the board for the Cadillac & LaSalle Museum & Research Center. Since the Fall Festival is a fund raiser for the museum, Anderson works diligently to make the event a worthwhile stop for hobbyists, and he and the rest of the team made this an unmatched Cadillac experience. Among the judges were one dozen automotive designers, each of them with experience designing Cadillacs and their components over the years. These judges included the famous Wayne Kady, whose design became the 1971 Eldorado, and who created this year’s event poster. On top of it all, Kady served as honorary chief judge. Maurizio Corbi of coachbuilder Pininfarina came all of the way from Italy to participate. In addition, several Cadillac & LaSalle Club members served as judges, including yours truly, as did fellow magazine editor Richard Lentinello of Hemmings.

This is an event worthy of the Cadillacs and LaSalles it celebrates the Cadillac and LaSalle experience like no other event. I plant to return next year, and if the brake system is fully functional on my ’55 Cadillac by next September, I’ll even be there with an old Cadillac. I hope to see you there with your car, too.

Angelo Van Bogart is editor of Old Cars and has been a Cadillac & LaSalle Club member since he was 17 years old. He’s a multiple Cadillac owner and author of several books including “Cadillac: 100 Years of Innovation.” He serves as a judge at many club and concours events each year.

Jacksonville, FL – The 2019 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, held on March 7-10 at the Ritz Carlton and the Golf Club of Amelia Island, celebrates the 60th anniversary of Ferrari’s legendary three-liter V-12 250 GT “Short Wheelbase Berlinetta” honoring the last of the true dual-purpose Grand Touring cars.

The Ferrari 250 GT brochure codified the SWB’s mission:

“The design of this new Berlinetta by Pininfarina had, as the main objective, a streamlined body particularly suitable for high speeds. We also took into account the requirements of comfort, so that this can be used as a Grandtourismo as well as for racing. It provides a sufficient space for luggage, has a heating system, doors giving easy access, comfortable seats, there is plenty of visibility. The 250 GT Berlinetta therefore, can be used for both touring and racing without any particular modification.” – Excerpt from the original Ferrari 250 GT “SWB” brochure.

Of all the shapes at the 1959 Paris Auto Salon one stood apart. The new Ferrari coupe was 150 pounds lighter with a wheelbase 200 mm shorter than the 250 GT it superseded. That sharpened the handling, especially cornering. It was the sensation of the show and its new proportions instantly invested it with the nickname “SWB” — Short Wheelbase Berlinetta — whether it was the steel-bodied grand tourer or the aluminum-bodied racer.

The new SWB was the athlete of Ferrari’s GT catalog during the years racecar engineering orthodoxy changed profoundly. Surrounded by change, Ferrari stuck with what he knew best. In Modena the horse still “pulled the cart” but, finally, disc brakes on all four wheels — a Ferrari first — and tube shocks absorbers turned Maranello’s new GT marathoner into a nearly perfect package. It was an instant hit with racers of all stripes: a true dual-purpose GT able to be driven to the track, raced successfully and driven home on public roads.

SWB-mounted Belgian racer Willy Mairesse won the ten-day 1960 Tour de France Auto ahead of three other 250 GTs and repeated the feat in 1961. Class victories and high overall placing in such grand classics as Le Mans, Sebring, Daytona, the Nurburgring, Pescara and the Targa Florio soon dotted the SWB’s lusty competition résumé.

Even so, complacency might have been understandable in Modena during 1961. Ferrari had just “tripled”, winning the Formula 1 World Drivers and Constructors titles plus the 1961 World Sports Car Championship; a first. As parochial as Enzo Ferrari seemed — at an age when most men sought the ease of retirement — he felt strong winds of change blowing through motorsport.

By 1961 fresh theories, technologies and threats were sprouting on the road, track and in the showroom. New World Championship rules focused on grand touring cars made an even more muscular and specialized evolution of the versatile SWB seems prudent. The SWB was a hard act to follow. Yet the result was another famous Ferrari three-liter V-12 GT coupe, a pure descendant of the SWB — created on the SWB’s frame — that also became known, unofficially but permanently, by its three immortal initials: GTO.

“The ‘SWB’ was touched by genius,” said Bill Warner, founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “It was engineered by Giotto Bizzarrini, Carlo Chiti and Mauro Forghieri, the body was designed by Pininfarina and constructed by Scaglietti. The 250 SWB is among the greatest and most enduring automobile shapes of all time.”

“The last road car that might legitimately be considered a true Ferrari is the 365GTB/4 Daytona.” -Brock Yates, Enzo Ferrari (Doubleday, 1991)

It’s been a half-century since Pininfarina created the timeless shape of the Ferrari 365 GTB/4. On March 11, 2018 that happy anniversary will be celebrated at the 23rd annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance with a special class of the rare and significant Ferrari 365 GTB/4 “Daytona”.

<button

It was revenge, not Ferrari that gave the 365 GTB/4 its popular nickname. The name of America’s first superspeedway clung to the big Italian GT after Ferrari prototypes avenged themselves on American soil following their stinging defeat at Le Mans in 1966. Three victorious Ferrari P4 and P3 prototypes executed a perfectly choreographed photo finish winning the 1967 Rolex 24 at Daytona. It mocked Ford’s botched photo finish at Le Mans the previous June. There was little subtlety in it and everyone got the point. And the name Daytona stuck to the 365 GTB/4 almost at once.

<button

So the mighty 365 GTB/4 became known as “Daytona” even though Ferrari never made it official. Some historians claim that the project was labeled “Daytona” internally during its gestation following the 1967 Daytona 24 Hour sweep. Then the internal nickname “Daytona” leaked. Ferrari himself was said to have squelched the use of the name when it became public.

Today the Daytona has a special place in Ferrari’s lustrous history. Automotive tastes and the traditional designs that had served Ferrari so well for two decades were under assault in the late sixties. So Ferrari made one last thunderous declaration regarding the creation of the thoroughbred grand touring car. They labeling it in traditional Ferrari fashion: 365 ccs per cylinder, Grand Tourismo Berlinetta, four overhead camshafts; 365 GTB/4.

Nearly 1,400 Daytonas were built in coupe and convertible configurations. It outgunned its pricier and rarer 3-liter predecessors with a muscular 4-cam 4.4 liter V-12 fed by six enormous 40 mm Weber carburetors. This exotic recipe makes 380 hp and propels the big two-seater to nearly 180 mph. A sobering number for a 3,600 pound GT.

Despite its weight the Daytona made a fine race car. Ferrari created 15 special competition 365 GTB/4s from 1971 through 1973. They scored class victories at Daytona, Watkins Glen and Le Mans and won the 1972 Tour de France outright. Second overall (with class victories) at the 1973 and 1979 Rolex 24 at Daytona, appropriately, are the Daytona’s North American racing high water marks.

“The Daytona has traditional Ferrari provenance, presence and poise.” said Bill Warner, founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. “The Daytona is the last of the true ‘Enzo’ Ferraris created before the Fiat influence arrived in Maranello in 1969. The howl of that big V-12 should be part of Il Canto degli Italiani, the Italian national anthem. The big Daytona is a car, a name and a legacy worth celebrating in grand style.”
