“What began as a series of U.S. events has grown into a global tour for car and Hot Wheels enthusiasts around the world to share their passion projects while competing for a chance to have their creations immortalized in 1:64-scale,” said Ted Wu, senior vice president and global head of design for vehicles and building sets at Mattel. “With the inclusion of Benelux, Peru and Turkey this year, we cannot wait to see what these unique countries and cultures bring to the table as we continue to expand the Hot Wheels Legends Tour globally.”

Limited-edition Matchbox die-cast of the iconic 1949 Kurtis Sport Car, the first car to be celebrated on the cover of MotorTrend magazine 75 years ago. Motortrend Group

Los Angeles, Calif. – MotorTrend Group, a Warner Bros. Discovery company announced the release of a limited-edition Matchbox die-cast of the iconic 1949 Kurtis Sport Car, the first car to be celebrated on the cover of MotorTrend magazine 75 years ago. An instant collectable, the Matchbox Kurtis 1:64th die-cast is now available for online purchase exclusively at MattelCreations.com for $30.

The public debut of the Matchbox Kurtis die-cast took place at the first stop of MotorTrend’s HOT ROD Power Tour 2024 in Bowling Green, KY. Displayed alongside the die-cast will be the life-size version of the actual cover car from the September 1949 issue. The third of 18 ever built and the first production model, the Kurtis Sport Car serial number KB003 is a time capsule of American car culture.

Frank Kurtis, founder of Kurtis Kraft Inc., is said to have been one of the inspirations for the start of MotorTrend. Following HOD ROD magazine’s success, publisher Robert E. Petersen was given the suggestion by Kurtis to create a magazine that covers new cars. Petersen then took the photos of the Kurtis Sport Car himself for the cover and the first MotorTrend issue went into production. The vehicle also has a deep connection to HOT ROD, as founding editor Wally Parks drove the car — fitted with a special full race engine — to 142.515 mph at the inaugural Bonneville National Speed Trials. Parks autographed the glove box lid, right next to the small plaque commemorating his achievement, making it the only car he ever signed.

“Petersen could have put any car on the first cover, but he chose the Kurtis because it spoke to future automotive design and cutting-edge trends,” said Ed Loh, Editor-in-Chief of MotorTrend Magazine. “Bringing the Kurtis to life as a die-cast for the world to enjoy is the ultimate way to celebrate MotorTrend’s 75th anniversary.”

“Creating this special Matchbox Kurtis die-cast reminded us of the legacy that MotorTrend has created through decades of reporting on the car trends that define our industry,” said Bryan Benedict, Key Principal Designer, Matchbox. “We’re excited to offer this special collectible with fans and celebrate automotive innovation and excellence with MotorTrend.”

The exclusive collectible Matchbox Kurtis is part of a year-long celebration as MotorTrend commemorates its 75th anniversary. The Matchbox release follows a reader vote to name the Chevrolet Corvette the most iconic vehicle through the MT75 Icons program, the release of 75th anniversary merchandise, and the historically significant release of MotorTrend’s full archives in digital format for the first time ever.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., /PRNewswire/ — Mattel announced the winner of the 2019 Hot Wheels Legends Tour. The Nash custom car, built by best friends Greg Salzillo and Dave Ford, will be joining the Hot Wheels collection as a 1:64 scale die-cast. The Nash is the second fan’s car to become a die-cast and will hit shelves in-stores nationwide in 2020. The announcement was made at the 2019 SEMA Show, the world-renowned auto show in Las Vegas, where all finalist cars are on display alongside Hot Wheels fleet of life-size vehicles.

Salzillo and Ford’s build was chosen from almost 5,000 custom cars entered in the Hot Wheels Legends Tour, which visited 20 cities throughout Europe and North America.

“The second year of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour brought more cars, more fans and more competition – it’s hard to choose just one winner to be made into a die-cast car!” said Ted Wu, VP, Global Head of Design for Vehicles, Mattel. “We chose ‘The Nash’ as it represents the true garage spirit by bringing generations together and creating an impressive car that’s built, not bought. You see it and instantly know it’s meant to be Hot Wheels with that color, the shape and the dice.”

A team of judges, including Hot Wheels designers and automotive influencers, chose the Legends Tour winner for its authenticity, originality and garage spirit. The final team included celebrity auto aficionados Jay Leno, Adam Carolla, Richard Rawlings, Editor-in-chief of MotorTrend Ed Loh, international auto influencers Juca and Sidney Hoffmann, founder of Gumball 3000 Maximillion Cooper, legendary auto designer Dave Marek and Peter Brock, Speed Channel’s Car Warriors host Brad Fanshaw, CarCast co-host Matt D’Andria, racecar drivers Jackie Heinricher and Collete Davis, YouTube sensation Tanner Fox, VP of SEMA Warren Kosikov and more.

The Legends Tour winner’s life-size car and die-cast version will also join the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends, a collection of one-of-a-kind cars immortalized as Hot Wheels die-casts that meet the brand’s high benchmarks of style and performance.

The Nash has a small-block Chevy 305. The car originally came stocked with 40-hp and now touts 300-hp. The build has custom headers coming out of the fenders, old-school stock steel wheels and original bias ply tires.

“We’re extremely overwhelmed, proud and excited over what Dave and I created with The Nash,” said Legends Tour Winner Greg Salzillo. “I can’t wait to see my kids’ faces when they see their dad’s car turned into a real Hot Wheels toy.”

EL SEGUNDO, Calif./PRNewswire/ — Hot Wheels announced the return of the Hot Wheels Legends Tour, a national traveling car show searching for a life-size custom car worthy of being made into a Hot Wheels toy car. This epic tour will kick-off in Miami on March 16th and makes 18 stops looking for cars that embody the high standards of performance and design of Hot Wheels.

“Our first Hot Wheels Legends Tour set the bar high, bringing together tens of thousands of passionate, brand fans and car enthusiasts of all ages in a first-of-its-kind tour experience to celebrate our 50th anniversary,” said Chris Down, Global Head of Hot Wheels. “It was invigorating to see fans and families showcase and celebrate car culture in a way only the Hot Wheels brand can and now we’re ready to take year two to the next level by expanding the tour with new partners and stops.”

Attracting over 3,600 cars and 65,000 fans, the inaugural Hot Wheels Legends Tour – held in 2018 to celebrate the brand’s 50th anniversary – brought together car fans of all ages from across the country. Partnering with brands like Mobil 1, Dickies, Honda, Microsoft Xbox and Mechanix, the second annual tour will expand with additional and new stops in the U.S. to give even more fans a shot at seeing their custom car become an iconic 1:64 die-cast toy car. The winning vehicle will also be inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends, a collection of one-of-a-kind cars that embody the brand’s challenger spirit and legendary design.

“We’re proud to support the Hot Wheels Legends Tour in its second year, giving fans of such an iconic and nostalgic brand yet another opportunity to experience this unique event,” said Michele Biamonte, Consumer Brand Marketing Manager, ExxonMobil. “The chance to celebrate car enthusiasts of all ages throughout the year and help ignite the automotive passion in today’s youth is something Mobil 1 is honored and excited to be a part of, and we can’t wait to make this year’s tour even bigger and better.”

At each stop, fans will show off their unique custom builds to a talented team of judges consisting of Hot Wheels designers, automotive experts and influencers, who will select one finalist based on the criteria of authenticity, creativity and garage spirit. At the end of the tour, one finalist from each of the 18 stops will win a trip to the 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, where their custom creations will be judged side-by-side to determine which one will be made into a die-cast car sold around the world.

This tour is much more than a car show; each tour stop will also include on-site experiences such as racing simulations, pit stop challenges, Hot Wheels Kid Zone, photo opportunities, and a chance to check out the rest of the Hot Wheels life-size fleet. And to keep the fun rolling between stops, Hot Wheels will send a custom “vending machine + play” truck to over 75 additional Walmart stores so fans of all ages can get their hands on their own Hot Wheels toys and exclusive merchandise.

The Legends Tour will stop at select Walmart stores in the following U.S. cities: Miami (March 16), Houston (March 30), Dallas (April 13), Atlanta (April 27), Bentonville (May 11), Charlotte (May 25), Philadelphia (June 1), New York City (June 15), Detroit (June 29), Chicago (July 13), St. Louis (July 27), Denver (August 10), Seattle (August 24), Phoenix (September 7), San Jose (September 21), San Diego (October 5), Los Angeles (October 19).
FORT WORTH, TX — In celebration of Hot Wheels’ 50th Anniversary, the U.S. Postal Service issued a pane of 20 Forever stamps showcasing some of the classic toy car’s most outrageous designs. The stamps were issued during the Goodguys 26th Summit Racing Lone Star Nationals at Texas Motor Speedway.

For the first time, Hot Wheels are commemorated on Forever stamps for fans of all ages to enjoy. Arranged in diagonal rows, the 20 stamps showcase photographer Len Rizzi’s images of 10 Hot Wheels cars — two of each design — speeding along the recognizable bright orange track.

“Today, we make history as the Postal Service and our partners at Mattel are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Hot Wheels with these dynamic stamps showcasing the iconic toys that were a part of my childhood and that of my children,” said USPS Marketing Vice President Steve Monteith, who served as the dedicating official. “These miniature works of art truly capture the thrill and excitement of these legendary vehicles and now will speed their way as Forever stamps on millions of cards and letters.”

Joining Monteith at the ceremony were Harry Davies, vice president, Event Operations, Goodguys Rod and Custom Association; Ricardo Briceno, director, Global Brand Marketing, Hot Wheels; and Deborah Ferguson, “NBC5 Today” anchor.

Each stamp features the name of the vehicle shown in one of the top corners and the words “USA” and “Forever” in one of the bottom corners. The well-known Hot Wheels logo appears in the top right corner of the pane. The back of the pane displays the Hot Wheels’ 50th anniversary logo.

The Hot Wheels cars depicted are:
Top row (left to right):

• The aptly named Purple Passion (1990), a super sleek metallic purple and green model. The car remains a favorite of collectors.

• Equipped with a roof-mounted rocket, the Rocket-Bye-Baby (1971) is one of the most aggressive racers in Hot Wheels history.

• Perfect for Halloween, the spooky Rigor Motor (1994) is a coffin-shaped hot rod that is powered by a huge engine adorned with two skulls.

• A spectacularly powerful version of a classic muscle car, the Rodger Dodger (1974) has a giant engine bursting out of its hood.

• With a twin turbo V6 hybrid engine and wide front air intakes built to look like a predatory fish, the Mach Speeder (2018) is a true 21st-century racer.

Bottom row (left to right):

• The Twin Mill (1969) is one of the most iconic Hot Wheels cars of all-time. The speed machine features dual big-block engines.

• The distinctive Bone Shaker (2006) is a hot rod with a fierce-looking skull for a grille. The car has a massive short-block engine made to rattle your bones.

• The HW40 (2008), a car introduced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Hot Wheels, features a jet turbine engine. The space-age vehicle features a futuristic glass hood.

• The original surfboard-toting Deora (1968) was included in the first Hot Wheels line. The souped up Deora II, showcased on the stamp, came out in 2000.

• The Sharkruiser (1987) is a carnivore on wheels. The completely unique design features fins, a tail, a sharp-toothed grille and a roaring V8 engine.

William J. Gicker was the project’s art director. Greg Breeding designed the stamps.

Hot Wheels History

Hot Wheels was born when Mattel co-founder Elliot Handler challenged his design team — which included a General Motors car designer and a rocket scientist — to create a toy car that was cooler and performed better than anything on the market. Mattel soon introduced its bright orange tracks, which provided children unlimited ways to test out stunts and racing skills. The Hot Wheels toy line expanded rapidly. Since the inception of Hot Wheels, Mattel has produced thousands of varieties of cars. In 2011, Hot Wheels was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. Today, children and parents alike still love racing the eye-poppin’, colorful, lightning-fast cars.
