The 1973 Chevrolet Corvette XP-897 GT was one of two mid-engine Corvette prototypes designed by General Motors Styling Division to promote the smooth and high revving Wankel Rotary engine. The rotary was intended to power GM passenger cars from 1976, so both cars were shown at the major worldwide auto shows from September 1973 to April 1974. Unfortunately the rotary Wankel engine proved to be both thirsty and polluting compared to the conventional piston-in-cylinder engine so the simultaneous gasoline shortage and strict Federal emission legislation sealed its fate.

After the last show appearance in Europe the XP-897 GT lost the rotary engine and was sealed in a plywood case and stored at the British GM Division Vauxhall Motors Design Centre in Bedford, England. Scheduled to be crushed in the early 1980s, it was rescued by Corvette author Tom Falconer with the assistance of then GM Head of Design, Chuck Jordan, and has been displayed in Kent, England until recently.

On March 10, 2019, the XP-897 GT will be displayed alongside a recently-acquired 1973 GM rotary engine at The 24th Annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

Monterey, Calif. – The 33rd annual Concorso Italiano, exotic and luxury Italian car show, announced a 1951 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Super Sport, the last 6C cabriolet ever built, won the coveted Best in Show award. The show, which hosted a record number of attendees, celebrated more than 1,000 works of Italian automotive art on the sprawling, picturesque greens of the Black Horse Golf Course.

Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini Head of Design, presented Herb and Rose Wysard of Fullerton, CA with a custom sculpture for the Best in Show award, which honors the event’s star vehicle.

Automotive enthusiasts were able to explore coveted autos from private collections from around the world. There were ten featured classes on display for 2018, which included: Alfa Romeo, De Tomaso, Ferrari, Fiat, Iso & Bizzarrini, Lamborghini, Lancia, Maserati, as well as a special coachworks and a global exotics collection, both comprised of non-Italian marques.

One of the most exciting examples displayed at this year’s show was the New Stratos, which made one of its first U.S. appearances. Based on the Ferrari F430, the New Stratos pays homage to the renowned Lancia Stratos, which is the undisputed king of rally championships of its time. Additionally, ATS Automobili Turismo Sport brought its ATS GT to the grounds. One of the best V8-powered GT on the market, the ATS GT’s shape was born from Emanuele Bomboi and is a true testament to Italian GT heritage.

As it is Concorso tradition to honor Italian milestones, this year’s event also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari Daytona, as well as the Lamborghini Espada and Islero. Event organizers also toasted the Alfa Romeo Giulia Super and four-door sedans, which included the Berlina, Alfetta, Milano, 164 and Giulia models.

Other honors bestowed this year included the prestigious “La Bella Macchina” hall-of-fame award, which was presented to Egidio Reali, CEO and founder of MR Collection Group. The Doug Magnon Preservation award was presented to Don and Sandi Treadwell for their 1974 Maserati Merak, and the Valentino Balboni award was presented to Steve Girard and his 1971 Lamborghini Espada II. He was gifted an automotive art piece by Luca Raimondi, an Italian artist from Sant’Agata Bolognese.

Peter Kumar has been working in the car business since he was 14 years old and began running his own dealership in 1988. The inventory at his Gullwing Motor Cars operation in Astoria, Queens, is a testament to Kumar’s work ethic and his love for old iron. His building is packed nearly bumper to bumper with a dizzying display of European collector cars, including the company’s namesake, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. Kumar is always on the go, scouring the country for interesting vehicles that he can buy and sell.

Kumar has been around long enough to see plenty of peaks and valleys in the oldcarbusiness, but like a disciplined stock market investor, he has kept the faith and stayed the course.

Recently we caught up with Kumar and fired some questions his way regarding the state of the old car hobby and his high-profile place in it.

Has business been busy this spring?

Yes, I just bought a couple cars today. I just bought a 1969 [Mercedes-Benz] 280SE convertible here locally this morning. I’ve been running around to Massachusetts, California, other states, everywhere. A lot of cars I can go check on myself. If I can drive it in 200 miles or so, I drive. Or else I fly.

What has the import market been like lately for you?

It’s been steady. I’ve been dealing with a lot of European cars: Lamborghini, Ferrari, Jaguar, Maserati… It’s been steady, not bad; not booming, but still going steady… It seems like there should be less and less cars around, but they are still coming. I used to think 15, 20 years ago that “This will be the last XKE I will ever be buying,” but they are still coming around. I bought 45 cars already this month, and two cars just today.

What has been the biggest reason for your staying power in the collector car business?

I would say, not bragging about myself, but it’s important to have a good reputation. We’ve been around 30 years … If I say I’m going to do something, I do it. We pay a fair price for the car and our margins our not big margins. We buy at a fair price and sell at a fair price. When we look at a car, we make a decision within 5 minutes, then we wire them the money. If we get a phone call [about a car], we move.

How many cars do you like to have in your inventory?

I like to have no more than 100 to 120 cars. Sometimes they don’t sell fast enough, sometimes we sell them within one hour, sometimes the cars sit for a year. You never know. Right now I have 175 cars. That’s a lot of cars — more cars than the room I have.

Everybody probably likes to ask the question: What’s hot right now?

Porsches are hot; 911 Porsches … 356s are hot. Old Jaguar XKEs are hot. All old Mercedes are good. The Gullwing, never in my dreams did I think it would go to a million, but it has surpassed that. Right now we have five in stock — two Gullwings and three SL roadsters.

What’s cooled off recently?

Some of the million dollar Ferraris, the prices have been cooling off. The $500,000 Ferraris have cooled off a little bit. That has surprised me a little, but I have seen it before. They cycle up and down, but they have been going up for seven, eight years.

Why the Gullwing Motor Cars name?

That’s my favorite car. That’s my dream car. A lot of times I wind up buying them because of my company name. People think of a Gullwing, they think Gullwing Motor Cars and we do have at least one all the time.

Besides Gullwings, what else to you consider your bread-and-butter cars?

I like everything, but I like the more original cars [best]. I like them original, but sometimes with the cars we are dealing with, you don’t have much for choices … Most of them were built before ’74, so they stopped building them more than 40 years ago. You don’t have much choice… I like the XKEs…any older Maseratis, Austin-Healeys, older Lamborghinis… any older cars.

Do you get involved much with auctions, either buying or selling?

I go to auctions mostly to meet people. I go to Pebble Beach, Amelia Island, Hershey, Scottsdale, but it’s mostly to see people. I buy sometimes, but not usually.

How long do you plan to continue on?

As long as I can go — as long as I have energy and good health. We started in ’88 … it’s been almost 30 years. You’ve got to love what you do, otherwise it gets boring. I’m into old cars. It’s a passion.

When you’re buying a Honda or Toyota or even a new Mercedes, they are boring. The old cars are much more interesting. And you always meet nice people in this business.

Orlando, FL,(PR.com) — Festivals of Speed announced it has doubled the size of its display space from 17,000 sq. ft. to 35,000 sq. ft. at the Central Florida International Auto Show. Dates for this year’s event are November 23-26. The location is the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. Featured manufacturers vehicles set for display include Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin and others.

Festivals of Speed which for the last fourteen years has showcased the world’s most exotic automobiles, motorcycles, aircraft, watercraft and luxury brands throughout Florida has had a display at the Central Florida International Auto Show for the last 4 years. Each year the space has grown in response to spectator interest in seeing more of the world’s most exotic cars, motorcycles and luxury brands that are presented.

When asked about the significant increase in display space, company founder Joe Sabatini had this to say, “Attendees have enjoyed our presentation of 35-45 exotics cars and motorcycles year after year. One request we receive consistently is to create and even larger display of vehicles so this year we have doubled our size to 35,000 sq. ft. to accommodate an incredible display of 65-85 cars and motorcycles.” In addition, Sabatini says the display will have luxury brand products that include luxury RV vehicles, high speed watercraft, extreme sport displays and other luxury lifestyle products such as fine time pieces, travel related services, fashion and more.

A special attraction to this display will be a 70-year anniversary tribute to Ferrari. Festivals of Speed will be celebrating these and other achievements by organizing special displays featuring some of the world’s most powerful and elegant Ferrari sports cars. Both vintage and contemporary examples will be on display. Examples include but are not limited to Ferrari La Ferrari, Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari 488 Italia as well as others.

Another featured attraction will be a display of Porsche 928 vehicles. The 928 celebrates its 40-year anniversary this year. The 928 was quite revolutionary when it was first unveiled back in the late 1970s, with an extensive use of aluminum body panels and engine, along with cutting edge technology used throughout the design, together with its near perfect weight distribution and stunning road holding and grip, the 928 was certainly a welcome vehicle to the Porsche lineup.

The Central Florida International Auto Show brings the largest auto show in Florida to Orlando for Thanksgiving weekend – Thursday, November 23 through Sunday, November 26. For four special days, the Orange County Convention Center will transform into a car aficionado’s dream featuring hundreds of the latest cars, trucks, crossovers, SUVs, alternative fuel options and hybrids, as well as exotics, classics and test drives. From consumers to car lovers, everyone is invited to check out all the latest vehicles in a non-selling environment, talk to product specialists, inspect engines and experience the latest automotive technology.

During his ownership he commissioned Wayne Davis to refinish the car in the original Silver. It has since become part of the Don Davis Collection, this well-documented beauty still retains its original no-hit aluminum body, Red seat covers, 6-inch chrome wire wheels and today remains one of the most original automatic-equipped Cobras in existence.

MONTEREY, Calif. – In honor of Zagato Atelier’s 95th Anniversary Concorso Italiano, known as the world’s largest showing of exotic Italian cars, will display eight stunning Zagato Atelier Contemporary Collectibles on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif. This will be the first time these cars have ever been shown together.

This exquisite grouping of one-of-a-kind cars will be shown at Concorso Italiano as part of the Zagato Atelier Contemporary Car Display. Each car was conceived and put into production by Andrea and Marella Zagato who represent the third generation of the 95 years old Milanese Atelier.

Known for its long-standing partnerships with luxury OEMs manufacturers, the stunning collection of automobiles will include a never before seen in the United States Lamborghini 5-95 Zagato. Flown straight from the factory in Rho, Italy to be delivered to its American owner, the Lamborghini will be the centerpiece of the display and will be shown alongside other Zagato Alfa Romeos, Ferraris and Aston Martins.

“We are honored to have these stunning modern day Zagatos as part of Concorso Italiano’s 95th Anniversary Zagato celebration,” said Tom McDowell, Concorso Italiano president. “This is the first time these contemporary cars have ever been seen together in a grouping, creating a display that is sure to impress car fans of all ages.”

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — When Edsel B. Ford II came upon the 1956 Lincoln Continental MK II last year, he admired the long lines and elegant custom styling of the automobile, but he didn’t immediately recognize it. Imagine his surprise when he learned the car had, in fact, belonged to his mother, Anne, as evidenced by the original owner’s manual inscribed with her name.

In all fairness, Edsel was just 8 years old when his father, Henry Ford II, ordered the car for his wife, who drove the luxury vehicle for about two years before selling it to her personal assistant for use as a daily driver.

The car, now impeccably restored, will be among the many pre- and postwar custom-bodied Lincolns featured at the 63rd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Aug. 18 at Pebble Beach Resorts. The 1956 Lincoln currently belongs to Rick Schmidt, whose father Jim discovered the dilapidated vehicle in a classified ad. Had they not already owned a 1956 metallic mint green MK II that had belonged to Benson Ford, and a 1956 sapphire blue metallic MK II that had belonged to William Clay Ford Sr. — both brothers of Henry Ford II — the Schmidts would not have taken on the project.

“It seemed only right to have the trio of 1956 MK IIs originally owned by the Ford brothers,” says Rick, “so we bought the car and dove into the project, taking on our biggest restoration challenge yet. It is now a stunning car, and we’re thrilled to bring it to Pebble Beach.”

The 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will feature:

Simplex — Among the rarest of early 20th century marques, just 48 Simplex automobiles are known to survive. Intended for only the most prestigious clientele, these chassis, which sold for the outrageous price of about $5,000, were bodied by the best coachbuilders of their day. The marque later merged with Crane, replacing its sporting cars with a more luxury image.

Vanvooren — Early in its history, Carrosserie Vanvooren was licensed to build Weymann fabric-bodied cars, but soon developed its own elegant and refined French designs that have stood the test of time. Vanvooren coachwork graced all the best marques of the day — Hispano-Suiza, Bugatti, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Delahaye. It also collaborated on cutting-edge creations, such as the Corniche prototype done with designer Georges Paulin.

Additionally featured will be: Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche 911, BMW 507 and French motorcycles.

Blancpain, classicdriver.com and RM Auctions will offer the 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo LP600 GT3 Racing Car, chassis 09825, at RM’s upcoming Monaco sale, May 12 at the Grimaldi Forum.

Offered by luxury Swiss watch manufacturer, Blancpain, the Lamborghini on offer is the racing car in which Blancpain President and CEO, Marc A. Hayek, won the 2011 Amateur-Class championship in the ADAC GT Masters Series. 100 percent of proceeds from the vehicle’s sale, including auction commissions, will be donated to AMM in its fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Built for competition by the Lamborghini Motorsport Department Reiter Engineering (DEU), this model Gallardo LP600 GT3 competed during the 2011 season in the Blancpain Endurance Series and in the ADAC GT Masters. Piloted by Marc A. Hayek and Peter Kox, it competed on some of Europe’s most prestigious race tracks including the Autodromo Nazionale Monza (ITA), Silverstone (UK), Spa-Francorchamps (BEL) and Höckenheim (GER). It was indeed on the legendary Höckenheim circuit that Marc A. Hayek was crowned the 2011 amateur champion at the final of the ADAC GT Masters.

The 2011 Lamborghini Gallardo LP600 GT3 racing car joins more than 90 blue-chip automobiles at RM’s upcoming Monaco sale on May 12. The weekend, which coincides with the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique, will also include the sale of more than 100 Ducati motorcycles on May 11.

“Monaco holds a very special place in the history of motorsport, so it’s therefore fitting that RM is accumulating a fabulous collection of some of the world’s finest historic racing machinery for this year’s sale,” said Max Girardo, managing director, RM Europe.

Another significant racing car for sale is a 1948 Ferrari 166 Spider Corsa “Fontana,” chassis number 012I. The ninth Ferrari in chassis sequence and the sixth 166 Spider Corsa built, the car boasts an extraordinary and extensive period race history, first with Scuderia Ferrari and later with Scuderia Marzotto, for whom it was rebodied in 1950 in the Barchetta style by Carrozzeria Fontana. The car’s competition portfolio in the 1948 to 1952 period includes two Mille Miglias and two Targa Florios, during which time it was piloted by such notable drivers as Bracco, Maglioli, Frolian Gonzales and the Marzotto brothers. Documented as one of the most raced Ferraris in existence, it was recently restored to concours condition.

Another important example on offer from the prancing horse stable is a 1974 Ferrari 308 GT4/LM, chassis number 08020, a one-off competition Ferrari built by the factory and specially designed to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In addition to the Ferraris, RM’s Monaco auction will lift the gavel on a competition-bred 1968 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 “Daytona,” chassis number 75033-029, and a very original 1969 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33-3, chassis number 10580-023 (the ex-works Autodelta Group 6 car).

French marques will also be well represented with a 1950 Talbot-Lago T26 GS, chassis No. 110057.

Event details are available online at www.rmauctions.com or by calling +44 20 7851 7070. For those interested in participating in the auction but unable to attend in person, RM offers a wide range of remote bidding options, including absentee, Internet and telephone bidding, and the auction will stream live online at www.rmauctions.com to provide real-time coverage of the event.
