The car was loaned to Eon Productions by the vendor, its first and only owner, as Aston Martin could not provide a factory DBS Superleggera for the production. The film company kept the DBS for two years for filming and promotional purposes and covered 800 of the car’s 850 recorded miles.

Performance wise, Aston Martin’s flagship Grand Tourer, powered by a 715bhp 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, is in the front rank of contemporary supercars, sprinting from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 211mph.

This DBS Superleggera is offered with a mounted and framed certificate from Aston Martin, thanking the vendor for the loan of the car, sill plates marking the car’s use in the production and an engine plate indicating that the Aston’s ‘final inspection’ was carried out by Daniel Craig.

This left-hand drive 110”-wheelbase crew-cab SVX was extensively modified by off-road racing specialist Bowler Motorsport to surpass standard Land Rover off-road capability, including fitting Rose-jointed suspension and rally-specification Bilstein shock absorbers. Its exterior enhancements include a full roll cage, LED roof lights, bonnet rope and WARN electric winch. Inside, supportive Recaro front seats were fitted for stunt-driving purposes.

From the silver screen to the small screen with a 1968 Marcos 1600 GT Coupé, which appeared in the 1960s television series The Saint. The car was driven by Roger Moore (later the third James Bond) as the title character Simon Templar in the program’s very last episode, The World Beater.

Although Templar was known for driving a Volvo P1800, in the episode’s opening sequence, he was seen driving on a rally before ending up in a (staged) crash following sabotage.

After many years, the GT was tracked down by renowned marque specialist Rory McMath of Marcos Heritage, who made a gentleman’s agreement with the vendor and fellow Marcos aficionado to give him first refusal when he sold the car.

The vendor purchased the Marcos in 2020 and commissioned Marcos Heritage to restore the car to its original production specification as driven by Roger Moore. A full body and mechanical restoration of this unique piece of motoring history was completed in November 2021.

The first time in over 40 years, the car has been driven at speed.

Nigel Woodward managing Director of CMC said: “The last few days have been something of a whirlwind, to win two prestigious awards within a week is fantastic and is a great tribute to the team at CMC who have worked so hard on the car for the last 18 months. But to cap that by accelerating through 162 on our first time out with the car is just the icing on the cake.”

The car was privately testing at the Royal Naval Air Station at Yeovilton in Somerset. This was part of a series of Royal Naval activities which has seen the car unveiled at the Hampton Court Concours by two Royal Naval apprentices from the Royal Naval Air Station. The car was showcased on board HMS Prince of Wales, Britain’s latest Aircraft carrier and the next testing taking place back at RNAS Yeovilton once analysis of Saturdays testing takes place and the conditions are right.

Richard Gauntlett, who represents the owner of the car Phillip Sarofim, and who sent the car to CMC for the restoration was elated:

“Seeing the car run like this for the first time in forty years is a dream come true. I grew up with the car, I had a poster of it on my bedroom wall. I cannot thank the team at CMC enough for the hard work that they have put into this Project.”

Victor Gauntlett, Richard’s father, was Chairman at Aston Martin when the supercar which was planned to be the first production car to exceed 200 mph. But the project was axed after the car reached nearly 192 miles per hour in 1980. The car was then sold and disappeared occasionally surfacing around the world. It was purchased by Phillip Sarofim two years ago.

It was only a lack of bravery on my part and the fact that we were still evaluating the car that prevented us going faster”.

Paul Andrews’ passion for the automobile traces back to his youth when he started his company, TTI Inc. in 1971. The first car he searched for was a 1958 Cadillac Seville – the vehicle he swooned over as a teenager. He later traded it for a Corvair to which he spent countless hours working on, before displaying it in his office. These two initial cars sparked his passion and led him to collect prolifically over the course of his lifetime. Notably, a passion he shared with his entire family with likeminded enthusiasts getting to know Paul and his children on the many of the car tours and events they participated in over the last twenty years.

In 2015 RM Sotheby’s had the distinct honor of executing a single owner auction of approximately 80 cars as he downsized his collection with the goal of getting down to a smaller number of cars that he could enjoy driving with his family. Paul’s collection consists of cars perfectly suited for driving and rally events with many having logged 1000s of miles on some of the world’s most fun and exhilarating vintage rallies.

The collection boasts outstanding Aston Martin examples with one of the headliners of the collection being the spectacular 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT by Zagato. This example boasts an impressive race history as it was successfully raced by Roy Salvadori at the May 1962 BRSCC Brands Hatch event, finishing first in class and second overall. It then went on to attend car club events, race many seasons at Silverstone and Donnington. It is now appreciated as one of the most exceptional sports racers and automotive designs of its era.

One of the most unique and prized Aston Martin examples available and one of only two LHD Lightweight DB4 GTs, the 1959 Aston Martin DB4GT Lightweight is “on the button” and ready to drive. Anything and everything has been done to keep it driver ready – allowing it great success at Colorado Grand and Copper State events. This “turn-key example” presents a remarkable combination of continental elegance and power and is surely to be welcomed at any historic motoring event.

Another notable Aston Martin is the 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible. It is one of just 19 factory original DB5 Convertibles built with left hand drive steering and was the last constructed by the factory. The original specifications included air conditioning, 5 speed ZF gearbox, Marchal fog lamps, Fiamm air horns and detachable headrests. In addition to the original options, this cosmetic beauty of this example is owed to R.S.Willams as they completed thorough restoration and orderly maintenance, making it the ultimate DB5 Convertible.

In addition to the Aston Martin lineup, the collection contains numerous stunning examples spanning more than 90 years of automotive history. One of the oldest cars in the collection, the 1929 Duesenberg Model J Dual-Cowl Phaeton was one that captured a special place in his heart. It’s been said that since the completion of its restoration, there isn’t a more ‘driven’ Duesenberg out there, and they are in fact, not wrong. This best-thriving Duesenberg has been a participant in an impressive three Duesenberg Tours, one Colorado Grand, the Pebble Beach Motoring Classic, and is widely regarded as one of the marque’s most driven examples. It was restored by noted craftsman Steve Babinsky for the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2009 and was given everything it needed to be the perfect example, both mechanically and cosmetically. Another example of a fantastic driver is the 1929 Bentley 4 ½ -Litre Vanden Plas Tourer. This untouched, original example looks no different than when new, save for the perfectly aging patina. Keeping its original four-seat tourer coachwork by Vanden Plas, only the interior front seats and leather-edged carpeting have been renewed, leaving the rest untouched.

The 1972 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 TT3 was driven by Andrea De Adamich and Nino Vaccarella to finish fourth overall in that year’s endurance race, which was won by Henri Pescaloro and Graham Hill for Matra.

One of three works Alfa Romeos run by Autodelta, this car was built from a new all-steel spaceframe tubular chassis, mated with a potent high-revving quad-cam, 36-valve V8 engine producing 440bhp, a new five-speed gearbox and new safety fuel tanks.

The Alfa duo in car number 18 overcame various incidents over the 307 laps, including a clutch issue and a spin which required the fitting of a new nose cone. Although Alfa Romeo retired from Le Mans, this car campaigned selected events with subsequent private owners, who included Steven O’Rourke, manager of British rock band Pink Floyd, himself a Le Mans racer, and three important Japanese collections: Hayashi Collection, Yamaguchi and finally Takeshi Fujita.

Continually maintained and restored by Tipo 33/3 specialists, this Tipo is eligible for the world’s greatest historic races and concours events, including the Le Mans Classic race which it last contested in 2018.

Another Tipo from an earlier era will also be racing into the Bonhams saleroom. A 1928 Maserati Tipo 26B 2.1-Litre Sports, Gran Premio and Formule Libre Racing Two-Seater.

This example’s bright red livery and 150bhp performance is matched by its exotic provenance. It was the first Maserati to be imported into Argentina by its first owner, rancher and weekend racing driver Juan Augusto (John) Malcolm, an Argentinian of Scottish descent, whose career overlapped with the great Juan Manuel Fangio.

Malcolm ordered ‘number 35’, while racing in Northern Italy, and the car was originally finished in blue and white – Scotland’s sporting colors – rather than the blue and yellow Argentine racing livery. Campaigned by Malcolm for the next decade, it was later converted for more comfortable road use and was kept by the family until the late 1980s.

GREENWICH, Conn. – Celebrating its 24th year of showcasing significant cars, motorcycles and one-off automotive creations, the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance will feature the custom coachwork of Zagato on May 31-June 2, 2019. The Greenwich Concours will honor the centennial of the famous Italian atelier with displays of more than 20 significant cars bodied by Zagato.

The Concours continues its tradition of holding two unique Concours back-to-back, with American cars and motorcycles on Saturday, June 1, and foreign marques on Sunday, June 2. The event takes place at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park overlooking the Greenwich, Conn., harbor on Long Island Sound.

Andrea Zagato, grandson of founder Ugo Zagato, and his wife Marella Rivolta Zagato, will represent the Zagato marque and are this year’s Concours honorees. Marella is the granddaughter of Iso’s founder Renzo Rivolta, and works closely with Andrea at the Zagato family business in Rho, Italy.

One of the more compelling Zagato-bodied cars to be featured at the Concours is the 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Corto Spider originally built to order in 1933 for race-car driver Tazio Nuvolari. It was prepared by Raymond Sommer for the 1933 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Sommer and Nuvolari placed first overall. Three weeks later, it was driven by Sommer and Henri Stoffel to second overall in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. Barron Collier became its next owner, winning the Mt. Washington (N.H.) Hillclimb in 1937. It was subsequently raced by various owners in the U.S. until the early 1950s. It will be shown at the Concours by its current owner, Scuderia N.E.

Other cars on the field designed by Zagato will include those of Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Maserati, Lancia, Jaguar, Nissan, Porsche, and Aston Martin. Also displayed will be examples of the rare Alfa Romeo Tubolare Zagato, a 1964 Alfa Romeo TZ1, a 1965 Alfa Romeo TZ2, and a 2012 Alfa Romeo TZ3.

To honor Marella Rivolta Zagato, there will be a special Iso class, featuring such cars as a 1970 Iso Rivolta Lele and a 1973 Iso Grifo.

“We are honored that Andrea Zagato and Marella Rivolta Zagato will celebrate this very special anniversary with us at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance,” said Concours Chairman Mary Wennerstrom. “We will have a great variety of cars built by all three generations of Zagato, from the 1930s to the modern day. We also are pleased to honor Marella’s heritage with a special class of cars from Iso.”

The weekend will also feature cars of Stanley H. “Wacky” Arnolt, a Chicago industrialist who began importing foreign cars in the 1950s to the U.S. Although sold as American cars, the cars were true hybrids, with British mechanicals, Italian bodywork, and U.S. sales and distribution. A fortuitous meeting with Bertone at the Turin Auto Show in 1952 resulted in four collaborative efforts between Arnolt and Bertone.

His son, Michael Arnolt, will be an Honorary Judge at the Concours and will bring his Arnolt-Bristol Bolide. Arnolt-MGs, Arnolt-Bristols and Arnolt-Aston Martins will come to the Concours from as far away as New Mexico and Arizona.

American Orphan Marques and American Supercharged Cars are the special classes on Saturday. Cars of interest include a 1948 Tucker and a 1954 Kaiser in the orphan class. A 1952 one-off Packard Macauley Speedster with a McCulloch-supercharged 359-cu.in. straight-eight engine will be in the supercharged class.

Sunday’s Concours will host a special display of cars from the Bentley Driver’s Club in honor of the marque’s 100th anniversary, including models from the early W.O. Bentley and Derby Bentley eras, up to post-war and modern examples.

The weekend will also showcase orphan motorcycle marques. American Iron Magazine publisher Buzz Kanter will showcase limited production marques that no longer exist including a 1938 Mandille et Roux D2 “Passe-Partout,” a 1971 Münch Mammoth, and a 1950 Vincent Black Shadow Series C.

The Concours will again benefit Americares, a health-focused relief and development organization that responds to people affected by poverty or disaster with life-changing health programs, medicine and medical supplies. The Stamford, Conn.-based organization is the world’s leading nonprofit provider of donated medicine and medical supplies.

A silent auction will be held to raise money for The Hometown Foundation, of Cheshire, Conn., which honors and assists five distinct areas of interest including Animal Welfare, Emergency Response Personnel, Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities or in Need, Major Illness and Military.

New York – Bonhams is proud to announce that in April it will have the privilege of auctioning the renowned Tupelo Automobile Museum Collection.

Built by TV and telecommunications pioneer, Frank K. Spain, the famed Mississippi collection comprises more than 160 automobiles from every decade of motoring, beginning from the 1890s through the 1990s. Highlighted by major American classics, such as a 1948 Tucker that was one of the original Indianapolis test cars and a 1929 Duesenberg Model J Sedan, prestigious British and European marques are also represented, such as Bentley and Lagonda, and Hispano-Suiza and Talbot-Lago, to name a few.

With a lifelong passion for automobiles, Spain began building his extensive collection from the early 1970s until his passing in 2006. Predating the modern era of the internet, his searches were done the old-fashioned way, following-up on tips, responding to obscure advertisements in newspapers, and attending local, national and international events, including the famed Harrah Collection sales.

Says Rupert Banner, Bonhams Vice President of Motoring, “The collection is a cornucopia of wonderful machines, telling the story of the development of the automobile and charting the various ways in which manufacturers pioneered self-propelled vehicles. The scale, breadth and presentation of Spain’s museum is just extremely impressive.”

And with Tupelo being the birthplace of Elvis Presley, there’s a 1976 Lincoln Continental Mk IV purchased by Elvis, complete with a copy of the check Elvis wrote and his famous “TCB” (Taking Care of Business) logo etched into the side windows. Additionally, the extensive collection of motoring signs decorating the museum walls will also be sold.

Bonhams will be taking care of business on April 26th and 27th, when the doors of the Tupelo Automobile Museum will open for one last time, with previewing taking place on April 25th.

Jane Spain, Frank’s wife and partner in their car collecting journey, said, “For more than a decade it has been the greatest pleasure to honor my husband and to see people come to his home town to appreciate the collection he enjoyed building. Ultimately, I feel that the greatest legacy of his passion for engineering, design and the motorcar is for them to be shared with other collectors and for that reason I’ve made the difficult decision to part with this collection. In selling the group, the proceeds will go to a charitable educational foundation. I hope that others will enjoy acquiring and owning them as much as he did.”

More information about this historic sale will be posted in the coming weeks at Bonhams.com/Tupelo.

MONTE CARLO, MONACO – An Aston Martin made famous in a starring role in British cinema, will be available for bidding at RM Sotheby’s London auction on September 5th. Built in Aston Martin’s famed Newport Pagnell factory in Buckinghamshire, the DB4GT—once owned by admired actor Peter Sellers and automotive star of 1963 comedy film “The Wrong Arm of the Law”—is a celebration of British heritage as RM Sotheby’s prepares its 12th annual London sale.

Driven in a memorable car chase scene by Sellers in its starring role, the 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT, chassis no. 0157/R, retains its original ‘41DPX’ registration as seen on the silver screen. According to the Aston Martin DB4GT book, Sellers—a known car enthusiast, also famed for his leading role in the “Pink Panther” film series—enjoyed driving the car so much, he bought it shortly after production concluded and maintained ownership for a brief period. Following filming, the engine was replaced with a 4.0-litre Lagonda Rapide block by the factory in March 1963.

Following Aston Martin Owners Club motorsport event participation in 1966, the DB4GT—originally delivered in Dubonnet Red before being repainted in green for its film appearance—changed hands and colors a number of times before eventually returning to England in 1998. A year later, the DB4GT underwent a full restoration, including body and chassis work as well as complete engine and gearbox rebuilds collectively worth more than £126,000 ($170,776). Upon completion, the car featured in the November 2003 issue of Octane magazine and has been retained by its current owner since 2004.

The DB4GT was built by Aston Martin as a lightweight, high-performance iteration of the standard DB4. The ‘GT’ version was constructed with lightweight aluminum metalwork, while the wheelbase was also reduced, resulting in many DB4GTs having no rear seats – though this example retains the ‘occasional seats’ in the back. The standard DB4 saw production from 1958 to 1963, with a mere 75 standard ‘GT’ models built, making this car the ultimate collector’s coup, whether a film buff or discerning Aston Martin enthusiast. The DB4 was later succeeded by the Aston Martin DB5, which would go on to laud its own film success as a car forever associated with the James Bond movie franchise.

Felix Archer, Car Specialist with RM Sotheby’s, said: “This is an historic car that simply can’t be missed. Not only is a DB4GT one of the most desirable grand touring cars of the 1960s, but it’s fitting that this particular Aston Martin, with its close ties to British cinema, should become one of our headline lots at this year’s London sale. Peter Sellers’ love of cars was undeniable—he’d owned 83 by the age of 39—and he’s been long linked with the Aston Martin brand. In addition to its on-screen past, the car is offered in stunning condition, and is a product of a glorious age of iconic British car manufacturing.”

Motorcycles will also star at the Caffeine & Carburetors festival of Italian machines. A rare 1952 Moto Guzzi Falcone Sport will be among those brought by Buzz Kanter, renowned collector, racer and American Ironmagazine Editor-in-Chief and Publisher. Falcone production was very limited with less than 2,000 made between 1950-1967. Only a few hundred were the Sport high-performance model, featuring higher compression pistons, larger cam and carburetor, and more expensive shouldered alloy wheels. This particular bike was owned and restored by famed motorcycle historian, author and restoration expert Stephen Wright, ranking as one of his favorite personal street bikes.

Caffeine & Carburetors is held in New Canaan, Conn., four times a year: twice on Downtown’s Pine and Elm Streets and twice at the Town’s Waveny Park. 2018 will also bring Munich Fest: The Ultimate BMW Gathering on June 17 at Waveny Park; the All-Original Sole Survivors Show of barn finds and family-legacy cars on September 16 on Pine and Elm Streets; and Gatsby at Waveny: ‘20s and ‘30s Grand Classics on October 21 at Waveny Park.

Exotic and rare, one-off and classic—stellar cars and motorcycles and their collectors flock to Caffeine & Carburetors for Sunday morning coffee, conversation and camaraderie. A perennial mainstay on the calendars of motoring enthusiasts, the four annual events each draw upwards of 1,500 vehicles and 5,000 visitors to this quiet, affluent New York City suburb.

Arnolt-Bristol, Austin-Healey, Aston Martin, BMW, Bugatti, Jaguar, MG, Morgan, Porsche and Triumph as well as Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford and Pontiac will be counted as additional automotive notables neighbored by equally unique vintage trucks and two-wheeled stars.

Founded in 2008 by Doug Zumbach, Peter Bush and Todd Brown based on Zumbach’s similar 1995 program, Caffeine & Carburetors sparked the ubiquitous proliferation of similar shows. Zumbach is often approached for guidance by local and nationwide organizers setting up their own events modeled on the C&C concept. The booming success of C&C necessitated its expansion from its Downtown New Canaan, Conn., Pine Street home base of Zumbach’s Gourmet Coffee to adjacent streets and parking lots. Two shows each year are hosted at the Town’s 250-acre Waveny Park.

Caffeine & Carburetors is grateful to its sponsors: Bankwell; Blackbridge Motors; Elm Restaurant, New Canaan, CT; Jaguar Darien; Land Rover Darien; Meccanic Shop of North Salem, NY; Mercedes-Benz of Greenwich and Penske Automotive CT.

TIME: 8-11am
