Al Rogers highlights a Hi-Po Four-Door Fairlane

In 1968, Bob Mannel began his search for his first Fairlane. A friend had provided him with a 1963 Ford Buyer’s Digest, which showcased all the Fairlane models and available engine options for that year. Among the illustrations, the depiction of a High Performance 289-4V engine caught Bob’s eye and sparked a lasting fascination with this particular powerplant.

Sometimes, the speed bumps of life can stall our restoration projects. Several eons ago, back around 2004 when our subject 1958 Ford came to Cole Cano’s family body shop business, it wasn’t intended to be used for paint material storage.

The following clip dated Aug. 5, 1927, may be the earliest notable news appearance of the new Model A Ford. The clip was recently found by Bob Gardner in his search of history. He wanted it to be shared as a forgotten milestone relative to American automotive advancement.

Cars conceived as quick responses to competitors’ designs aren’t always memorable. However, Ford succeeded surprisingly well in 1950 when it came up with the Crestliner, a stopgap model set apart by careful application of trim.

Gerald Perschbacher on the classic marketing of Packard

“Ask the Man Who owns One” was Packard’s dominant phrase that remained vibrant for more than half a century in the car industry. The slogan-turned-motto was embeded in the company’s formative days in Warren, Ohio, as the 20th centrury was dawning. Although the Packard automobile faded from the market in the 1950s, it seems the memory of the motto will never retire among car collectors. It is classic.

Old Cars covers Worldwide auction and 55th year in Auburn

Since 1958, activities over Labor Day weekend in Auburn, Ind., have centered on three of the most prestigious brands of automobiles ever produced in the United States: Auburn, Cord and the legendary Duesenberg. Starting in 1971, a new feature was added to this multi-day event with a collector car auction where these Classics were put on the block. During the first year, the biggest news was that a Duesenberg Model J was bid to the amazing figure of $270,000, which was not enough to meet the reserve. Since that time, and every year since, even during the pandemic in 2020, one or more auction house has offered a prestigious line-up of cars for sale.

Since 2006, Worldwide Auctioneers, headquartered in Auburn, has conducted a sale with carefully curated vehicles for the discerning bidder and collector. And for the last several years, Worldwide has been conducting its sale at its expansive and modern facility in the Kruse Plaza where their home offices are located.

By 1971, the Mustang had changed significantly from the original version. Its identity, though, remained perfectly clear.

For 1971, Ford gave the Mustang a restyling and an increase in size. While many prefer the original best of all, the fact that it was a later example played a major part in owner, MIke Celiberti’s decision to buy his 1971 Grande in 2000.

Since about the end of December, I have been “missing in action” as far as writing this blog goes. I’m sorry about this, but sometimes life gets a little overwhelming and it’s hard to keep up with it all.

This winter wasn’t a bad one here in Wisconsin, but for a while there, it seemed like we were getting a little snow every other day. That was one thing that kept me busy shoveling snow at a new (actually over 100-years-old) building I bought in Waupaca, Wis., to eventually expand my business.

But my hibernation wasn’t all weather-related. I had an assignment to write a Volkswagen book and I had been dragging my heels on that project. Then, I received a call from the publisher. “Get it done by the end of the month or we’ll tear up the contract,” he said. Yikes! So, I buckled down and spent about a month banging a book out.

About the same time, Old Cars Weekly locked me in for two old car pricing projects. One involved adding another year to the Old Cars Price Guide database. The other was aimed at correcting or updating several sections already in the Old Cars Price Guide.

By this time, it was the end of February and time to start working on my income taxes. When you’re driving 30,000 miles a year to attend car shows to write about, you rack up a lot of mileage and travel expenses and your taxes take longer than normal to do. Generally, I write two articles or blogs everyday, but in March I could not even average one a day.

In the first three months of 2016, I traveled a lot less than in the past few years. I skipped the Milwaukee World of Wheels, the Chicago Auto Show, the Progressive Motorcycle Show, the Racing & Performance Expo, the B-O-P meet in St. Charles, Ill. and the British swap meet in Wheaton. On top of this, The Shop Show in Indianapolis was not held this year.

Finally, the first week in April rolled around and I was ready to start coming up for air. The month started with a 5-day trip to the NEW Motorama (www.newmotorama.com) in Green Bay, which included a return visit to The Automobile Gallery (www.theautomobilegallery.org) . Then, I started to get back to writing a couple of stories per day. And now, I’m finally getting back into action on these blogs. It’s nice to have something to do in retirement, but sometimes it’s just hard to do it all.
