Winners of the Old Cars Golden Quill Award for 2024 have been carefully selected based on each publication’s ability to meet the needs and preferences of club members while maintaining a high integrity in content, creativity, information, accuracy, design, variety, technical ideas and overall feel. Awards are given out in National and Regional Divisions for Compact, Intermediate and Full-Size print publications based on page count and page size of the magazines and newsletters. Speciality publications that fit this mode have also been considered.

Chief judge in the selection is Dr. Gerald Perschbacher, distinguished longtime writer for Old Cars. His experience has been enriched by collector car ownership, research and countless collector car events. With many years of editorial professionalism, he and the Old Cars staff intensely reviewed the large volume of club periodicals issued in 2024 to thin the selection to some of the very best in the hobby.

“Copies of club publications have been sent regularly by mail to two locations — mine and the editorial office of Old Cars,” Perschbacher says. “Winners are selected upon approval by both myself and the editorial office before awards are granted.”

Perschbacher adds that these winners are “some of the very best,” since a small number of clubs, nationally and regionally, still do not submit their publications for consideration. “We would like to consider those in the future, so check with your editor if your club is not among the winners — and encourage the following addresses to be put on their regular mailing list for gratis copies: Old Cars Editor, PO Box 658, Neenah, WI 54957 (note this is a newer address), and Dr. Gerald Perschbacher, Chief Judge, 8868 Rock Forest Drive, St. Louis, MO 63123-1116.”

Angelo Van Bogart, Old Cars editor, indicates that occasionally clubs update mailing lists and these addresses may be inadvertently removed. “We cannot consider a club’s publication unless it is being sent to us. This works to the benefit of every club so that an honest and balanced review is made, especially since the judging staff are members of several clubs.” All publications are to be sent in printed form rather than electronic submissions. “Otherwise, it is like comparing bananas with watermelons,” Perschbacher says. “It just doesn’t work right. Quality in printing and color rendition are among the judged values for professional quality.”

Regional or local car clubs producing a small publication may choose two issues from the entire year and submit those for award review. Hard copies are to be sent to both addresses.

“As for regional clubs with a publication of more than eight pages per issue, they should submit each issue due to the depth and coverage they provide,” Perschbacher said. “National clubs, museums and associations would remain unchanged in the rules and still send a copy of each issue to both addresses.”

As a special benefit to car clubs and the hobby overall, publications that are sent to both addresses may be highlighted in Old Cars’ “Club Clips” column, thus expanding the reach of those clubs and augmenting potential membership growth.

A special category has been added in the recent competition: Exemplary status. “These publications are in the lead in advancing our hobby,” Perschbacher says. “This sets a pattern for growth as never before.” He joins Editor Van Bogart in congratulating all the 2024 winners mentioned in this issue. “May they continue to hold high the torch of our hobby.”

To assure that your club is entered in the Golden Quill Award competition for 2025, send gratis copies to both addresses:

What it takes to earn Old Cars’ coveted club pub award

“It is a privilege to announce that dozens of car club publications have been honored with the Golden Quill Award by the editorial staff of Old Cars magazine, a well-established mainstay in the world of vintage car publications,” says Angelo Van Bogart, Old Cars editor. “Quality, balanced content, creativity, accuracy, admirable layout and design plus professionalism are main factors in the selection.”

Van Bogart added that, when judging club publications, the Old Cars staff looks for a balance of historical articles with stories about members and their vehicles, technical articles and club communication. “There should be a good balance of images showing members and their vehicles — but not too much of one over the other — plus helpful information and leads to resources that strengthen the club, its members and the hobby,” he added.

Dr. Gerald Perschbacher, chief judge for the competition, noticed several shifts in publications during 2021. Some were thinned in page count or in frequency, likely due to less activities and income attributed to the COVID pandemic and the curtailing of select activities. Some clubs skipped issues and, in rare cases, may have gone into hibernation. A few clubs even lost their editors to the virus, which affected the club’s ability to publish.

“There was less to report when it came to events, but plenty to include on special features,” Perschbacher notes. So member memories, experiences and stories seemed to be bumped up in frequency. He sees this as a benefit for car clubs since it builds rapport. The hobby slowdown also resulted in a rise in technical and historical features that Perschbacher believes will strengthen enjoyment of the hobby and the preservation or restoration of collectible cars.”

“Some events were planned then canceled, and advertising space seemed to take a dip. But overall, clubs shouldered the situation. “If there are heroes in this process, let’s give a special word of appreciation to editors who kept the old car hobby rolling in print,” he adds, “and let’s not forget club members who supported their editors by providing articles and pictures.”

On the plus side, several publications increased their page counts when frequency changed, or the necessity of communication was heightened. This resulted in a new “Super Size” category for national publications. In 2021, it was not unusual for a national car club publication to surpass 80 pages, some going as high as 116 pages, or more.

The category of Honorable Mention in the following list does not note winners, but potential publications that may rise to be winners in future annual contests for the Golden Quill Award.

There are still car club publications that are not in competition, but can be considered for 2022. To be involved, clubs are to send gratis printed copies upon publication to the two sources involved in judging:

Old Cars Editor
5225 Joerns Drive, Suite 2
Stevens Point, WI 54481

AND ALSO

Dr. Gerald Perschbacher, Chief Judge
8868 Rock Forest Drive
St. Louis, MO 63123-1116

Hard copies sent to the addresses above are also eligible to be featured in the “Club Clips” section that appears in each issue of Old Cars, and be further promoted online on Old Cars’ website and Facebook page.

Since publications are categorized and judged for the Golden Quill Award based on printed copies, it is necessary to mail publications to the above addresses in order to be considered for the award. Those clubs that only offer their publication via email may still enter the 2022 competition by sending printed copies of the club’s digital publication to the addresses noted.

Is your club’s information up to date on the Old Cars Club List?
Olds club magazine gets taste of auction life

“I recently was encouraged to submit our chapter newsletter, The Blue Gray Rocket Report, to the Golden Quill Awards,” wrote Darlene Myers, editor of the publication. Accompanying her letter were several recent samples of the publication. Her club is the Blue Gray Chapter of the Oldsmobile Club of America, serving Pennsylvania and Maryland enthusiasts.

This club sends issues to its members via email to save costs and speed delivery. Yet, to enter the Golden Quill competition, printed copies are required to even the playing field for all entries since most are sent to club members only in paper form.

Myers’ September edition is an enticement for readers to enjoy. Of special note was the behind-the-scenes Mecum Auction experience covered by Rich Saullo and Ed Grebeck plus Ron and Jim Mummert, photographers. David Morton of Mecum Auto Auctions offered regional car clubs the chance to attend an event showing the ins and outs of an auction from the Mecum perspective, focusing on Harrisburg, Pa., as the site.

Mecum’s three-day auctions take extra effort seldom seen or appreciated by the public. The article noted that there were “at least 100 (electronic) monitors showing every possible angle of the entire complex including the seven other buildings that housed the memorabilia sale and the cars waiting to come the block.”

Rich Saullo, club president, was introduced to the video audience to hammer down the sale of a 1968 Ford Bronco pickup at $28,000. “It was a huge adrenaline shot and a once in a lifetime chance to do this,” he noted. More than 15 color pictures of the event made readers feel as though they were there.

All this reminds us that car clubs can interface with the public far beyond club activities. As clubs put their best image forward at car shows, large or small events, special displays, auctions and a plethora of other interfaces, the general public notices the results. If cordiality, warmth, excitement and good cars are evident, it is a reflection of a car club and every member in it. Hence, being in a car club makes each member an ambassador for the hobby.

In this case, Mecum helped to make that happen.

Our annual salute to the top club publications

Scores of regional and national publications are receiving the Golden Quill Award for club publications published during 2013. “It’s thrilling news for each club, especially for their editor and the support crew that make each publication a reality,” says Angelo Van Bogart, editor of Old Cars Weekly which issues the annual award.

He adds that there are 45 “Honorable Mentions” which show a hopeful bunch of potential future winners. “Honorable Mention” is not an award category, but offers special recognition by being listed in this issue.

The Golden Quill Award is presented as recognition for the publishing efforts of national, regional and local car clubs, registries, associations, museums and related organizations.

Researcher and OCW columnist Dr. Gerald Perschbacher serves as chief judge. He and the OCW staff inspected and evaluated publications throughout the year. Perschbacher shared interesting information from nearly 100 club publications throughout the year in OCW’s weekly “Club Clips” column. When the final 2013 club submissions came to his attention, he offered conclusions and insights to the editorial staff of OCW. The final selections were then made.

“Clubs are encouraged to submit each issue as it comes out — and send a copy to my attention and to the OCW office,” Perschbacher said (see addresses at end of article). “Too often, a club changes its mailing list and one or the other location is dropped. Simply put, if publications are not received, how can they be judged?”

It is important for clubs to submit hard copies of the printed publication. “Sometimes it’s a close call between publications, and the only way to offer a fair judgment is to spread the competitors out for one-to-one comparisons. That just cannot happen easily on a computer screen,” Perschbacher notes. Likewise, the quality of printing and paper stock can sometimes come into play, which can be determined only when hard copies are sent.

What are the various criteria used in selecting a Quill winner? High standards in several areas are important. A well-balanced publication “meets the needs of its club members and advances their appreciation and knowledge of old cars and the hobby in general,” says Perschbacher. News of the hobby and the club, advancements in hobby services, discoveries, historical insights, interesting tales, events, human-interest items and technical articles are sought. Good photos with little (if any) condensing to fit a space are reflective of the publication’s worth. Editors should avoid distortion of visuals and the facts. Layout, design, readability, a variety of fine visuals and professional/semi-professional approaches to the publication are examined. Continued growth of the quality of the publication is also encouraged.

There are no first-, second- or third-place winners of the Golden Quill Award. A winner is a winner. The categories are based on size of the publication by page count and dimensions. Most often, the “National Luxury” category is for publications with 32 or more pages, often (but not necessarily) in color. “National Intermediate” is for publications usually ranging from more than 12 pages and up to 32. “National Compact” is up to and including 12 pages or those of small dimensions. Contenders are grouped according to size to increase the fairness of the final selection. This also reflects the amount of printing/production costs each club puts behind its publication. Likewise, the chapter and regional organizations are divided by size with “Regional/Chapter Full-Size” containing high-page-count, glossy color publications. “Regional/Chapter Sub Compact” generally includes black-and-white publications with about 12 pages per issue.

“It’s too late for consideration for 2013, but 2014 is in full swing. So now is the time to begin submitting your club’s publication,” Perschbacher encourages.

For possible club exposure in the weekly “Club Clips” column and entry in the Golden Quill Award competition, send copies of each issue to two addresses: OCW Editor, 700 East State Street, Iola, WI 54990 and Dr. Gerald Perschbacher, 8868 Rock Forest Drive, St. Louis, MO 63123-1116.

Winning publications will be recognized in the annual list of winners appearing in OCW in the spring after the calendar year being judged. A certificate will be sent to each winner marking the achievement.

Publications listed in “Honorable Mention” will not receive a Golden Quill Award certificate, but have the distinction of being noted in the print and online versions of OCW.

By the Old Cars Weekly staff

“The Golden Quill Award honors outstanding efforts by editors and their clubs in fostering progress in the old car hobby, and the impact of the award is tremendous,” says Dr. Gerald Perschbacher, chief judge for the award. The Golden Quill Award is issued by the staff of Old Cars Weekly to provide special recognition of literary achievement that boosts the hobby.

In recent years, the quality and competition between publications has taken several steps higher. “As desktop publishing became more sophisticated, so did club magazines and newsletters,” adds Old Cars Weekly editor Angelo Van Bogart. “Quite a number of national publications have reached such high quality that they could compete on the magazine rack of a bookstore. Those publications would be right at home beside news and features magazines. That’s how far our old car hobby has come in publishing.” Therefore, being a club member has benefits, if nothing more than just receiving the publication.

To level the field, categories are designated based on size, complexity, paper stock and circulation. There is also a category of Honorable Mention.

Perschbacher explains: “National clubs have a larger financial base from which to operate, which means more color and fancy design techniques often abound. Regional clubs have lesser circulation and, in general, significantly lower budgets. Some national clubs pay professional editors, whereas regional clubs often do not have the funds. So the categories are necessary for all clubs to have fair consideration.”

As for Honorable Mention, it is a category that respects the wholesome achievements of publications and encourages greater progress in order to jump into the award categories. Certificates are sent to publications listed in the Golden Quill Award categories. Those listed in Honorable Mention simply have name recognition in this issue of Old Cars Weekly.

“Our hobby continues to make good progress in publications,” says Van Bogart, “and I anticipate that future competition will reflect an even greater series of advances for 2013.”

For publications to be in consideration for 2013, clubs are to send copies of each issue to two locations: Dr. Gerald Perschbacher, Chief Judge, 8868 Rock Forest Dr., St. Louis, MO 63123-1116 and Editor, Old Cars Weekly, 700 East State St., Iola, WI 54990. Clubs that have publications that are only electronic (also called e-publications) in fairness to others should submit printed copies to the addresses listed.
