Santa Monica, Calif. – Automotive auction house Gooding Christie’s has announced the Tommy Trabue Collection for its 16th annual Amelia Island Auctions, taking place on Thursday, March 5 and Friday, March 6 at the Omni Amelia Island Resort. The 27-lot collection of 1950s and 1960s Porsches and Alfa Romeos, many with incredible historic racing provenance and presented in beautifully restored and maintained condition, will be presented entirely without reserve.

Thomas “Tommy” Trabue is a talented vintage racer, serial entrepreneur, and co-founder of Ebbtide Boats. While spending time in Europe as a young man in the 1960s, Trabue became enamored by a variety of European automakers that were less common in the US, serving as the catalyst for Trabue to return to the States, find a job, and buy his first Porsche. In 1968, Trabue did just that, purchasing a 1964 Porsche 356 SC Cabriolet that he restored by hand – the first of many such cars to come. In the early 1980s, Trabue had the means to start building his extraordinary collection of Porsches and Alfa Romeos, and began to partake in vintage racing. This culminated in what is today known as the Tommy Trabue Collection. Highlights from the collection include an Alfa Romeo TZ with extensive period racing history, two rare Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZs, a Porsche 911 GT-S retained by the factory for testing and development, an exceptionally well-restored Bahama Yellow SWB 911 S, and a 356 C Coupe ordered from the factory in an ultra-rare shade of orange and retained by one family for 46 years.

Leading Porsches from the Tommy Trabue Collection, Offered Without Reserve Leading Porsches from the Tommy Trabue Collection, Offered Without Reserve

“Tommy is a deeply respected vintage racer and has been active in the Porsche collecting community for over five decades. The presence of a collection like his, containing historic 356s and early 911s, some of which were modified by the factory when new for testing and racing efforts, presents an unrepeatable opportunity for collectors of the marque,” said Cameron Luther, Gooding Christie’s Specialist. “Having sold a small selection of cars from his collection at our Amelia Island Auction in 2020, we are delighted to be entrusted to represent his collection once again.”

“Although best known for his long-standing history as a Porsche collector, Tommy Trabue eventually turned his attention to Alfa Romeo, assembling a collection that represents the very best of the marque from the late 1950s through the mid-1960s – perfectly mirroring his 356s and early 911s,” said David Brynan, Gooding Christie’s Senior Specialist. “The core of the collection focuses on lightweight racing models, including a Sprint Veloce Alleggerita, both versions of the Sprint Zagato, a superb TZ, and a GTA. Each is a well-documented example, boasting period competition history or prepared for competitive vintage racing, and they are eligible for many of the world’s most important international events, from the 1000 Miglia to Le Mans Classic.”

HIGHLIGHT – 1999 Porsche 911 Classic Club Coupe

This one-of-one Porsche Classic project created in collaboration with the Porsche Club of America (PCA) features a 996- generation 911 Carrera enhanced through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch one-off program. The sports car’s one-of-a-kind modifications enhance its appearance and performance, taking inspiration from the 2010 911 Sport Classic, a limited-edition model that was not sold in the U.S. Completed at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the Classic Club Coupe has the complete drivetrain from a 2004-2005 996.2-generation 911 GT3, a water-cooled flat-six that makes 381 horsepower and revs to 8,000 rpm, and a six-speed manual transmission. The Classic Club Coupe’s chassis and brakes are also taken from the 911 GT3.

The design was headed by Porsche’s Director of Special Projects, Grant Larson, who is best known for designing the 986 Boxster and Carrera GT. A ducktail spoiler evokes the iconic 1972 911 Carrera RS 2.7, and a double-bubble roof pays homage to a motorsports practice to make room for the driver’s helmet. The Sport Grey Metallic paint is both unique and understated while the painted racing stripes are light Sport Grey Metallic with thin Club Blau accent stripes. The Classic Club Coupe toured North America in 2022, making stops at Porsche Parade and PCA events throughout the year. It will now seek a new home as part of Broad Arrow’s offering at The Porsche 75th Anniversary Auction this spring.

Providing an ideal venue for the auction, the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta is the first immersive brand destination built by Porsche in North America and is also part of the corporate headquarters of Porsche Cars North America (PCNA). Auction attendees will have the opportunity to tour the newly-expanded facilities, which include the new, state-of-the-art home of Porsche Classic featuring Factory Restoration which opened in early 2023, and the incredible new driver development track (opening on April 1), inspired by some of the most dynamic elements of iconic race courses around the world.

The Philadelphia Concours will showcase a collection of significant Porsches and an invitation-only assembly of American and European classic and historic automobiles and race cars, and will include professional judging and awards presented for historical accuracy, technical merit, and style. A panel discussion among the icons of Porsche’s unparalleled racing and corporate history will be held during the concours.
Featured will be the 1970 Porsche 917 that is on display at the Simeone Automotive Foundation Museum. The “Hippie” Porsche is, arguably, the most well-known of all the 917s built. It’s not remembered for its racing record – it never won a race. It is remembered for its distinctive “psychedelic” green, blue, and white paint scheme, one of the very first racing sports cars to have more than a single color. Nicknamed the “Hippie” 917, it competed at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France in 1970 where it set the lap record and came in second. The next year, repainted in the Gulf team blue and orange, it sat on the pole before retiring after 12 hours. It still holds the quickest lap time for the original Le Mans course, a record that will never be broken since the circuit was changed the next year.

About Cool Cars for Kids:

Cool Cars for Kids, Inc., is a nonprofit organization based in Philadelphia, Pa., that brings together families of children with genetic conditions and classic car enthusiasts who share a common passion and appreciation for the one-of-a-kind.
Along with the digital catalog comes final entries within the latter category, led by a trio of carbon fiber-bodied McLaren supercars. The delivery-mileage, single-owner group is topped by a 2015 McLaren P1, chassis no. SBM12ABA4FW000168, the second to last of just 375 P1s produced and the only example delivered new with stunning McLaren Special Operations (MSO) exposed carbon fiber bodywork.

An outstanding example of McLaren’s pioneering, 903-hp hypercar, the P1 is capable of 0-186 miles per hour in just 16.5 seconds. This one-of-a-kind example is equipped with the seldom-seen MSO stage two tuning with dynamic wing control, along with over $400,000 in carefully selected options, including the extremely rare 24-carat gold heat shield. Offered with just 130 miles at the time of cataloging, the car remains in excellent condition following prominent display at the Petersen Museum and is a prime example of a beautiful, comfortable, and yet entirely functional design.

The P1 would inspire the additional cars in the group, the 2019 McLaren Senna #68, and the 2016 McLaren MSO HS #16, both featuring nearly identical specifications. The Senna wears stunning Full Visual Gloss Carbon Fiber bodywork, a highly desirable and valuable option worn by very few McLarens. Equipped with over $300,000 in options, including the 24-carat gold heat shield, this is not simply just one of 500 McLarens named for Formula One’s greatest champion. This is one of the most extensively optioned and well-specified Senna models offered in recent memor. Finally, the McLaren MSO HS (High Sport) is among the most exclusive McLaren offerings, as one of just 25 examples built, each delivered to McLaren’s most VVIP customers with completely bespoke specifications. This example was specified with over $300,000 in options from MSO and is one of just 7 delivered new to the U.S., again clothed in an exposed carbon fiber body, and presented in ‘just out of the box’ condition with 75 miles at the time of cataloging.

Broad Arrow’s Amelia Auction is flush with additional top-tier supercars, including a stellar example of the Porsche marque’s technological masterpiece, a 1987 Porsche 959 Komfort, chassis no. 0051. One of just 292 production 959s built, this French market example is offered in its original colors of Silver Metallic over ‘Interior to Sample’ Black leather upholstery. Complete with its matching numbers twin-turbocharged flat-six along with the very rare multi-piece tool kit and warning triangle, the 959 features subtle performance modifications and is offered at Amelia fresh from a recent service. Joining the 959 is a well-preserved example of the Porsche marque’s standout supercar of the 2000s, a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT, chassis no. WP0CA29875L001523. Having had just three owners from new, this Carrera GT has been meticulously serviced throughout its life and presents a fantastic opportunity to any collector considering the very best of the final generation of analog supercars.

Additional standout supercars set for the Amelia Auction include:

A special Carbon Series 2021 Ford GT featuring carbon fiber wheels and stripes. Finished in a beautiful Extended Color Palette 3 Shell Grey exterior, which was originally an Aston Martin color from the 1950s, the GT is offered from its original owner with just 671 miles at the time of cataloging.

The modern GT is complemented by a 2006 Ford GTX1. Finished in Mark IV Red over Ebony Black Leather with desirable ‘stripe delete’, the GT is further enhanced by Genaddi Design Group’s X1 upgrades, which include a convertible, targa-roof conversion blessed by Ford. Vehicle number 33 of what is believed to be fewer than 40 Ford GTX1s, this is a remarkably well-documented car retaining nearly all of its original literature.

A race car for the road, a 1991 Jaguar XJR-15, one of just 27 originally constructed in road-going specification. Tastefully restored and upgraded by Don Law Racing in 2012, the XJR-15 is offered in excellent condition ready to fulfill childhood enthusiast dreams.

A supercar for the track and the first 993 GT2 race car constructed, a 1996 Porsche 911 GT2. This GT2 was Rohr Racing’s entry for the 1995 Daytona 24 Hours, taking 2nd place in the GTS-1 class and 4th overall. Piloted by Jochen Rohr, Bernd Mayländer, and Hurley Haywood, the GT2 retains its matching numbers G50/54 transmission and includes its original M64/81 engine case. In the Porsche 75th anniversary year, surely endless opportunities await the new owner of this Porsche factory race car.

With a 1994 Porsche 911 (964) Speedster added to its collection, the Newport Car Museum now has on display all five production versions of the Porsche Speedster built since 1954. Newport Car Museum

PORTSMOUTH, R.I.– In June, the Newport Car Museum celebrated its fifth anniversary by adding five new cars to its collection, which is now 90+ strong and represents eight decades of automotive design. In September, it added yet another car: a 1994 Porsche 911 (964) Speedster, which is significant in that it means the Museum now has on display a Porsche representing every production Speedster version built since 1954.

“I’m fairly certain there are very few, if any, museums where the public can see all five production versions of the Porsche Speedster, which were built from 1954 to 2019,” said Newport Car Museum Founder Gunther Buerman, who personally selects frequent additions to his private collection just as he hand-picked the original 65 cars that launched the opening of the Museum in 2017.

The 911 Speedster, a minimalistic open-top two-seater, with a distinctive short, raked windshield, is a rare classic that combines timeless design with state-of-the-art technology. The model 964 was the third version of this famous car and featured significant styling revisions over previous 911 models.

It’s estimated that only 936 of the 964 Speedsters were built for the 1993 model year, with some of the later examples, like the one newly added to the Newport Car Museum collection being completed as 1994 cars. Only 427 of the 964s were allocated for the U.S. market.

The Museum’s ’94 Speedster joins Porsche Speedsters on display from 1956, ’89, 2011 and 2019. They are part of a more comprehensive showing of 14 Porsches in a Pop-Up Porsche Exhibit. But don’t let the “Pop-Up” part confuse you; the exhibit has earned semi-permanent status due to its popularity, so it’s not going to disappear anytime soon. It is set up in the Museum’s 5,000 square foot Event Space as a seventh gallery, complementing the six other galleries that represent World Cars, Corvettes, Ford/Shelby, Fin Cars, American Muscle and MoPars.

The Porsches, like all vehicles in the collection, are perched on low platforms or turntables, with no barrier ropes so that visitors can get up close and personal with these magnificent, iconic machines. Large-format artwork and award-winning historical videos commissioned specially for the Museum add to the experience, as does an impressive collection of Mid-Century Modern furniture that enables visitors to relax and reflect on the cars as art.

Atlanta, Sept. (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – The classic Porsche sports cars that rolled into Winner’s Circle at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) did not have the horsepower to match the 911 GT3 Cup race cars attacking the track over the weekend, but the trophies handed out were earned with just as much dedication and sweat as it takes to see a checkered flag.

Three regional finalists in the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge went through an ultimate evaluation during the three-day Sports Car Together Fest hosted by Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), September 2-4, to determine an overall winner of the second annual competition. Final judging was conducted by PCNA’s Joe Lawrence, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Glenn Garde, Vice President After Sales, and Doug House, Manager Technical Support, with the winner announced Saturday afternoon. Fans in attendance were also able to vote for their favorite restoration with a winner being announced on Sunday.

After months of diligent work, documentation and check-ins, the 1989 911 Turbo Type 930 restored by Champion Porsche won top honors over the 1996 911 Carrera 4S Type 993 from Porsche Exchange and 1982 911 SC Type 930 from Porsche Palm Springs.

“This was our first time taking part in the competition, and in typical Champion Porsche fashion, we gave it our all – and then some – in every step of the restoration project,” said representatives from Champion Porsche. “We saw some of the restorations from the previous year and knew that we had to do our best to step things up this year with our restoration. Not a single bolt was left unturned, and every single part was either replaced with new genuine parts from Porsche Classic or restored. Our mission was to restore our 1989 911 Turbo to exactly what the original factory build sheet called for, resulting in a true factory restoration. The competition this year was definitely stiff and there were some amazing builds out there. The cars that made it to Sports Car Together Fest was proof of that. It was great to talk Porsche with all the fellow competitors and to even feel a comradery amongst everyone.”

Judging panels throughout the competition have included Porsche Classic and PCNA area managers and experts. Scoring was based on criteria that include not only restoration – such as engine, suspension and interior – but also creativity, authenticity and craftsmanship are all taken into account. In the end, the Dark Blue Turbo from Champion marked every box and impressed the PCNA reps and fans.

“Taking a vehicle missing parts when the project began, Champion Porsche’s efforts to restore a well-appreciated and worn 930 Turbo exemplify our goal at Porsche Classic – keeping all classic Porsche models on the road,” said Jonathan Sieber, Manager Porsche Classic with PCNA. “The margins were incredibly thin. Our biggest takeaway from all three finalists, and every entry in the competition, was how the Restoration Challenge brought people together. Teams bonded over these vehicles while working on them and the dealerships were able to share their passion for classic sports cars with enthusiastic customers.”

The U.S. is home to more classic Porsche sports cars than any other market in the world. After decades on the road, some will inevitably be in need of a little extra care. Enter the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge which saw more than 60 dealerships from around the country take part. Teams of certified Porsche Technicians and the official catalog of 60,000 unique Porsche Classic Genuine Parts were enlisted to return the cars to their former glory. Represented in the competition were Porsche 356 and 914 models, five generations of the 911, transaxle models like the 944 and 928, as well as modern classics such as the first-generation Boxster and Cayenne, and Carrera GT.

Bonhams – One of the most important Porsche models ever produced will headline Bonhams Amelia Island Sale on March 3 in Florida, being offered after 50 years of ownership and displayed publicly for the first time since the early 2000s.

The Porsche 550 Spyder was a seminal model for the manufacturer, as its first genuine racing car design. Considered one of the most important racing cars in history, the 550 garnered success in the period’s most challenging international sports car and endurance races including the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race and the Mille Miglia. The 1500cc engined Spyder earned itself the ‘giant-killer’ soubriquet, as it claimed victory over larger-engined rivals.

The model introduced a semi-monocoque structure of a ladder steel tube frame stiffened by its sleekly aerodynamic lightweight aluminum body paneling. Power was derived from a complex four-cam 1500cc engine with an output of 110bhp. However, even with full road equipment, including hard top, early cars merely weighed around 550kg (1212 lbs.).

1955 was the year that the 550 claimed a 1-2-3 class victory at Le Mans, as well as placing fourth overall. It was also the year that the motor car offered was produced as chassis number 550-0036 in April.

From factory delivery, Spyder 0036 was raced by its first owner, famed German racing driver Theo Helfrich of Frankfurt. Helfrich was the 1953 Formula 2 Champion and Formula 1 veteran who also finished 2nd overall at the 1952 Le Mans 24 Hours. He campaigned the Spyder extensively in Europe, including at major German events at Hockenheim, Avus and the Nürburgring during the mid to late 1950s.

Like many German sportscars of the period, this 550 Spyder was acquired in 1959 by an American military man stationed in Germany, who brought it with him to the US two years later. The car raced in several SCCA and sports car events in the Upper Midwest, including Road America, until the mid-1960s. The Spyder then travelled to Florida where, in December 1972, it was acquired by the late notable collector, Dr. Gary Quast.

During his careful 50-year ownership of the Spyder, a meticulously accurate and factory correct five-year restoration was performed by Willison Werkstatt of Lake Park, Florida. The engine is fitted with a period-correct 547 unit, just a single digit from the original engine for the car (no. 90-035), rebuilt by legendary four-cam engine specialist Billy Doyle. It also retains its original gearbox (10027). Since its restoration, the Spyder has covered fewer than 100 miles and is presented in excellent condition.

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. – The Newport Car Museum in Portsmouth, R.I. is adding a Pop-Up Porsche Gallery to showcase new additions to its already expansive collection of beautiful, exotic, and rare cars. The Museum is housed in the now-iconic “Big Red Building” that visitors find hard to miss when they travel by car to visit historic Newport, R.I. from states such as Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont.

Until now, an impressive 80,000 square feet of Museum space has showcased over 75 cars in six galleries. One of these galleries, for World Cars, will remain home to five Porsches (among other marques), while the all-Porsche Pop-Up Gallery, opening May 1st in the Museum’s centrally located 5,000 sq. ft. event space, will bring in nine new cars.

Comprehensive Porsche List*:

“When we opened in 2017, we made a promise to ourselves to always keep things fresh,” said Newport Car Museum Founder Gunther Buerman, explaining that switching out cars and bringing in new ones is not an uncommon occurrence. “We love it when members and visitors are excited to come back, knowing they can see something they didn’t see the last time.”

For first-time visitors, they will be welcomed examples of “cars as art” in additional galleries for Ford/Shelby, Corvette, Fin Cars, MoPars and Muscle Cars. The collection covers seven decades of modern industrial automotive design, starting with the oldest cars from the 1950s, including a bright yellow 1954 Buick Skylark Convertible and jet-black 1954 Kaiser Darrin 162 and finishing with newer models from the 21st Century, including a sleek 2019 Corvette ZR-1 convertible and a power-hungry 2019 Dodge Demon as well as two new 2019 Porsche additions: the Miami Blue Porsche Speedster and silver Porsche Speedster Heritage.

All of Newport Car Museum’s cars are perched on low platforms or turntables, and no barrier ropes are used so that visitors can get up-close and personal with favorites. Award-winning historical videos commissioned for each gallery add to the experience, as do friendly, knowledgeable volunteer docents who can answer questions. “Hoods Up” events, hosted both days of every second weekend of the month, allow inspection of the entire collection’s engines. (All Porsches will be included in the next Hoods Up, scheduled for May 8-9.)

Mine was a ’61 Super 90 with a Bursch exhaust and Koni shocks; Pete’s was a stock 356 Normal. He was a starving student at Harvard Med, so those rear snow tires were all he could afford. I’d like to have my old Fjord Green coupe back; I already know how I’d turn it into a mild Outlaw.

And now for something completely different!

Hot rodding has many definitions — it’s not just about ’32 Fords with flathead V-8s. Take the early Porsche crowd, for example. If the definition of a hot rod is to take an old car, strip it down a bit, upgrade the brakes and suspension and install a hot engine, the Porsche guys do that — they just don’t call their cars hot rods.

They call them “Outlaws.”

The creation of the Outlaw

The “Outlaw” term arguably originated with Rod Emory, whose Los Angeles-area shop builds some of the best modified old Porsches imaginable. Emory’s sexy, race-inspired Porsche 356s kick-started the Porsche Outlaw trend that has swept Southern California and spread across the country. When you know Rod’s background, it makes perfect sense. His grandfather was Neil Emory, who partnered with Clay Jensen at Valley Custom in Burbank, one of the finest LA-area shops of the post-World War II era. Valley Custom specialized in sectioning, a radical surgery process that altered the shape of a stock American automobile by cutting a 3- or 4-in. swath of metal from its midsection, thus lowering the silhouette of the car while preserving the essential elements of its factory design.

“When you’re the grandson of one of the pioneers of hot rodding and custom car building,” Emory notes, “you can’t just leave well enough alone, can you?”

<button

“I’ve had my Outlaw Porsche 356 for at least 25 years,’ says Bruce Meyer. “I’m sure I didn’t invent the idea, but I was certainly one of the first. I bought my little ’57 356A Coupe in a basket, unassembled… I thought it would look cool as an old silver Porsche GT. The engine is a bit over 1800cc and develops about 125 bhp, which is enough.”

But the notion of hot rodding and customizing Porsches, with very few exceptions, was not commonly done. Rod Emory told me how he started:

“When Valley Custom closed,” Emory told me, “my grandfather, Neil Emory, went to work for Chick Iverson at VW-Porsche of Newport Beach, in 1961. And after he graduated from high school, Gary Emory, my dad, started at the dealership and became the parts manager. About 1974, Chick Iverson and my father started Porsche Parts Obsolete. Chick owned it; my dad ran it. Everything that was a couple of years old or overstocked would go back to Porsche’s distribution warehouses. They were actually destroying old, unneeded inventory, so Chip and my dad bought all of it and started Porsche Parts Obsolete in Costa Mesa.” (It’s still in business).

“Very soon, my dad was selling NOS (new old stock) Porsche parts around the world,” Rod continued. “In the back of his warehouse there was a room where we did some restoration work, playing around with cars for our own personal use. So when I was in high school, my dad and I would take old Porsches and lower them, polish the brake drums and trick ’em out a little bit.

When Rod Emory was customizing a rare ’53 Porsche coupe in the late 1980s, there was no class to display the car so he developed this little ‘Outlaw’ badge. Emory put these badges on his own cars and gave them to friends who were hot rodding their Porsches. Ever since, modified Porsches aren’t called hot rods; they’re Outlaws.

“Next thing you know, I’m doing a full restoration on a ’53 coupe for myself. I put body-mounted fog lights on it, and hood straps. The Porsche purists were freaking out because we were customizing a rare ’53 coupe. We went to a couple of events. There was no class to display this car in the late ’80s, so we came up with this little ‘Outlaw’ badge for our deck lids that read, “356 Outlaws.” We put those badges on the personal cars that we were building, and gave that badge to friends who were rodding their cars out.

“It started as a little private fun club, but people picked up the term, so any Porsche that’s modified now is called an Outlaw.”

There was a reason. Early Porsche 356s had just 60 bhp in “normal” form, 88 bhp in “Super” guise and 115 bhp as a “Super 90.” Even with a 2200-lb. coupe (Speedsters were lighter), that’s not a lot of suds. Typical Outlaw Porsches today pack Porsche 912 four-cylinder engines bored to 1700cc and even 1800cc with Weber carbs, hot cams and twin plug heads for 150 bhp and more. Most enthusiasts upgrade to five-speed gearboxes. Suspension mods include aftermarket sports shocks, springs and sway bars. Wider wheels and modern radial tires are a must, and most enthusiasts retrofit disc brakes.

Although body modifications are less popular, wider rear fenders, subtle dechroming and Carrera GT mods such as external fuel fillers and lightweight bumpers aren’t uncommon. Bruce Canepa is one of several restorers/builders who’ve taken a 911 six block, lopped off two cylinders and built the ultimate 2-liter-plus Porsche flat-four. And a few brave enthusiasts — such as Ken Fenical, aka POSIES, who supplies custom springs to the hot rod community — have fitted water-cooled Subaru flat fours good for an easy 200-plus horsepower.

Outlaw devotees

The 911 crowd has its Porsche Outlaw devotees as well. Practitioners such as Magnus Walker (Urban Outlaw), Marlon Goldberg (LA Workshop 5001) and Rob Dickinson, who founded Singer Vehicle Design, will happily build you a totally modified and restyled, air-cooled 911 that will flat run away and hide from some contemporary model Porsches. But you’ll pay as much as $500,000 for that privilege.

He let me drive this killer ’73 Porsche 911 with a 3.4-liter engine and adjustable KW suspension. This baby is really quick. Its “plain Jane” exterior fools a lot of canyon carvers in the Malibu Hills. If you see an understated 911 in your mirrors, better let ’em by….

Want to do it yourself? There’s a whole cadre of premier aftermarket suppliers including ANDIAL (racing, suspensions, engines, etc. — note: Porsche bought the ANDIAL company years ago); Nickies (high performance cylinders); Air Power Racing (high performance engines); Shasta Design (cams, crank-shafts, rods and engine parts); and many others who will sell you all you need to hot rod your old Porsche

OK, you could argue that this transforms a nice old car into a Frankenstein monster, but (of course) I disagree. It’s no different than the “resto-mod” craze that’s seen ill-handling vintage muscle cars transformed into faster, safer, more reliable cruisers. The Porsche Club of America and its many subgroups don’t frown on modified cars and the cars are welcome at club gatherings. You can find suppliers in Chrstophorus, the PCA monthly and in The Porsche 356 Registry, to name a few publications. Talking with many Outlaw owners, they’ve usually started with a beater 356 or 911, so you could argue that they’re preserving cars that might otherwise not have been restored. A great start is the book “How to make an old Porsche Fly” by Craig Richter, if you can find a copy. It’s been out of print for years, but it can be downloaded from the author’s website for a nominal fee.

One of the best-known Porsche Outlaw owners is Bruce Meyer, whose collection of historic race cars, Le Mans winners, Full Classics and hot rods is one of the best in country.

“I’ve had my Outlaw Porsche 356 for at least 25 years,” says Bruce. “I’m sure I didn’t invent the idea, but I was certainly one of the first. I bought my little ’57 356A Coupe in a basket, unassembled, and it was red. I’d already gone through my “red car” period and thought it would look cool as an old silver Porsche GT. The engine is a bit over 1800cc and develops about 125 bhp, which is enough. It’s got the full GT appearance group with Speedster seats and a roll bar. I’ve done a dozen rallies and driven it from Chicago to LA on Route 66…and I will be driving it again on Route 66 again soon. Since I built it, we’ve done over 20,000 trouble-free miles.

“I’ve driven Porsches since 1961,” says Bruce, “that’s over 57 years, and truth be told, it’s my most favorite marque. We also have an Outlaw ’72 911S with a 3-litre Twin Plug ANDIAL engine…it makes my ‘73RS feel slow!

“I love the Outlaw concept,” he adds. “It’s another fun way to enjoy the brand and much like hot rodding… you do it your way with cues inspired by Porsche’s rich racing history. With Porsche prices being what they are for the pure examples, it leaves a little on the table for the creative “Porsche-philes” to stand out and be in the game.”

So what do Porsche restorers think of all this?

I spoke with Cam Ingram, owner of Road Scholars in Durham, N.C., one of the premier Porsche restorers in the country.

“I think the Outlaw builders make a vital contribution to the Porsche brotherhood,” Cam said. “They’ve re-stimulated interest in the early 356s. Since the dawn of time, people have been modifying Porsches, especially Speedsters. The Outlaws are just a new interpretation. I think there’s a market for it, and it’s good for the brand and the hobby to have all these young people re-engaged. The collector car hobby is expensive and this allows a way for guys to get involved at a different price point.”

Cam’s Dad, Bob Ingram, owned one of Magnus Walker’s “Urban Outlaw” modified 911s. The Ingrams were impressed that Magnus had come to the United States with very little money or opportunity, then modified 911s for himself and became a popular success.

The little car never missed a beat. Bruce’s silver 356A sports driving lights, hood straps, a lowered suspension and a souped up flat 4. Even Porsche Purists love these modified cars.

“My father was interested in buying something that had become a cultural artifact,” Cam says. “We enjoyed owning it, but then we sold it. It became so recognizable my father literally couldn’t drive the car around, because of all the public attention it drew.”

I had to ask Cam if he’d build an Outlaw for a client. “We’ve had that (request) happen,” he said. “But we are really passionate as a company in authentically restoring these cars. It’s a niche market; we’re good at it, and it’s what drives me, to make sure that we’re preserving the cars the way the company actually produced them. There are many guys who do those (Outlaws), Rod Emory being the top guy — but we’re well-known for authentic restorations. Rod works on some cars that would never have been saved. I applaud him. We don’t get to do the super-sexy stuff. We do everything to factory specs.”

On a personal note, I bought a used Porsche 1961 356 S90 coupe right after I finished graduate school. Of course it had an aftermarket (and loud) Bursch exhaust and I upgraded the shocks, but it wasn’t an Outlaw — we didn’t even have that term in the early ’60s. I keep looking for that car, or one like it. Of course I’d have to upgrade the drums to discs and probably fit a hotter cam and Weber carbs. I am still a hot rodder, so the Porsche Outlaw mentality fits me to a T, and it seems to attract a lot of other folk, as well.
