There were no winners in this collision between what looks to be a 1951 Chrysler and a 1950 Studebaker. The Chrysler took a broadside hit and wound up on its side, but didn’t roll completely over thanks in part to a tree. The mishap occurred in New Jersey on July 10, 1953, and this photo was part of the Leigh Hopper collection.

“I have had this picture for about 10 years. I finally got around to sending it to you,” writes Jake Piontek, of Gary, Ind. “I saw this car off the side of State Road 80, east of Hazard, Ky…. I have been a reader for about 15 years and I love seeing the old car finds that you put in.” Somehow, this 1969 Impala Custom wound up crushed beneath a huge rock. It has been left alone as a monument to bad luck.

A well-equipped 1950 Pontiac Deluxe Eight had its dazzling grille mangled on a beautiful sunny day back in July 1956. A group of pedestrians are checking on the female driver, who was likely shaken after coming to an abrupt halt. Note how the impact reoriented the Pontiac’s chief hood ornament and surrounding metal. The scene was captured by investigative photographer Rodman Bingham of Menlo Park, Calif.

A 1965 Rambler Classic sedan took a shot from a 1961 Pontiac Tempest sedan, which in return was forced onto the sidewalk and into a tree. In the background is a desirable ambulance — a 1962 Cadillac. This circa-1965 Menlo Park, Calif.-area photo comes from investigative photographer Rodman Bingham.
