This car was found in a barn in western Kansas. The story was that the farmer bought this car for a hired hand so the employee had transportation. When the employee decided to quit and move on, he decided to take the car with him. The farmer informed him that wasn’t taking anything unless he paid him back for the car. The employee told him that he wasn’t going to pay him back, so the farmer reached into his pickup, grabbed a rifle and put a bullet through the radiator and said this car is going very far now! The employee left, they shoved the car in the barn and it sat there until I pulled it out! They had a super cool, big old Caterpillar they used to pull it out with!

There’re a lot of interesting cars for sale these days at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Ill., and one that really got us to stop scrolling was this sweet 1958 Edsel Corsair two-door hardtop.

Everything about this baby just seems right! Even if you aren’t an Edsel fan (and back then, not many folks were!), it’s hard not to be impressed by this sweet thing. It’s rare, it’s got a great gold-and-white two-tone paint scheme and according to the listing “was recently rescued out of long-term storage and is in amazing original condition.” And honestly, who doesn’t want a car with a steering-wheel-mounted push-button transmission? We’re throwing up a hand.

<button

It runs, but apparently one cylinder in the 410-cid V-8 engine is going to need some investigating. Everything else seems pretty close to turn-key. It’s listed for sale at $22,550.

Ken Dye is the proud owner of this ’58 Edsel Corsair. He has owned it for over 22 years.

This is what Ken had to say about his Edsel…

“I’ve owned her for 22 years. It was sold new at Federal Motors Edsel in Baltimore, MD. It built at Fords Wayne, MI assembly plant on October 4, 1957, the same day Russia launched the Sputnik satellite into orbit, so naturally I named her Sputnik. Finished in her colors Spruce Green Metallic and Ice Green with matching interior, she is still not completed, but has been driven halfway across the country to Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New Jersey and Kentucky.”

This week’s selection is a combo deal that we just couldn’t pass up (if we didn’t have a wife, that is). A seller in Tennessee has a 1959 Edsel Ranger two-door hardtop and a 1957 Mercury four-door hardtop that he’s willing to sell for a combined $6,000.

So other than the logistics of getting these two relics home, how much risk factor is there on this purchase? Not much. And the chance to brag that we have TWO barn finds at home — a ’59 Edsel and ’57 Merc, and they are both hardtops to boot — that just seems like a screaming deal, even if we aren’t sure what we’d do with them.

*The photos only show the Edsel. It looks complete and the seller says it ran five years ago.

This is one of those times we’d be willing to roll the dice. It would surely be a hoot to bring both of these cars home.

GROSSE POINTE SHORES, Mich. – Ford House, the historic estate of Edsel and Eleanor Ford, will be open to the public May 26, showcasing its first major expansion in over 90 years— a 40,000 square-foot Visitor Center and 17,000 square-foot Administration Building. The state-of-the-art Visitor Center will bring a new restaurant, four event spaces, exhibition spaces, expanded program offerings and breathtaking views of Ford Cove. This expansion project has allowed Ford House to convey the history of one of America and Detroit’s most renowned families in an interactive and immersive style.

Starting May 26 through May 29, visitors are invited to participate in an open house to see both buildings, explore the grounds and gardens, and enjoy fun activities to celebrate the expansion. Adult admission for the open house event will be $5 and includes access to the inaugural exhibitions, grounds and gardens. Ford House members will receive exclusive access the weekend before, May 21-23, with free admission. Purchase tickets in advance by visiting fordhouse.org.

The Visitor Center will open with three exhibitions—an orientation gallery and two rotating exhibitions. The Ford Family Story is a permanent exhibition that introduces visitors to Edsel and Eleanor Ford’s estate, demonstrates how the Fords built a life and home that paid tribute to the property’s natural environment, the arts and interior design. Equipped with multiple interactive displays including a virtual scrapbook and projected home movies, the exhibit shares intimate moments throughout the Fords’ lives on the estate. Driven by Design, the Visitor Center’s first rotating exhibition, will feature three rare vehicles that have never been showcased together – the world’s only 1939 Lincoln Continental prototype, the 1932 Ford Model 18 Speedster and 1934 Ford Model 40 Special Speedster – to tell the story of Edsel Ford’s role in bringing elegant automotive design to Ford Motor Company. The second traveling exhibition, located in the education wing, will feature artwork from the community. The Future of Movement will be the inaugural display, showcasing the next wave of ingenuity and mobility-forward automotive designs from College for Creative Studies students. This exhibition space was designed to rotate offerings on a regular basis; therefore, visitors will only be able to experience The Future of Movement until August 2021.

“My grandparents, Eleanor and Edsel, placed such a high value on hospitality, making guests feel welcome in their home. Adding new amenities to the Ford House experience in the form of the Visitor Center extends that hospitality to everyone who visits the estate today,” said Lynn Ford Alandt, chairperson of the Ford House board of trustees. “And in the new exhibits, you can hear the family’s stories in a personal way. It’s a lovely celebration of who they were and their legacy.”

The Visitor Center offers four event spaces and three meeting rooms, all equipped with the latest technology and completely adaptable to accommodate your business meeting, social gathering or workshops. The two signature private event spaces, the Lake Shore Room and the St. Clair Room, have sweeping views of Ford Cove and Lake St. Clair from the Visitor Center ’s second floor. Both rooms open to a balcony or patio, allowing for outdoor entertainment. To meet the needs of the business community, the Visitor Center also offers three conference rooms that can be rented for break-out sessions or committee meetings.

The 28th Orphan Car Tour took place on Saturday, June 2 along the winding, scenic back roads of Maryland’s Harford and Baltimore counties.

This year’s Tour was nicknamed “How the Other Half Lives” because the route wove past prosperous estates and horse farms of My Lady’s Manor and Worthington Valley, which lie north of Baltimore.

An all-day downpour had been forecast, but fortunately the rain held off until the tour had almost ended, late in the afternoon.

The day began in Jarrettsville, Maryland, where drivers of 42 cars converged on the Jarrettsville United Methodist Church parking lot starting at 9:30 AM. At least 28 of the autos were vintage “orphans”: antique cars with discontinued marques. The rest were modern automobiles, driven by those concerned about how their old cars might behave in the rain.

Participants greeted one another, registered their cars, and received the printed driving directions that each driver follows at his or her own pace. At 10:45 the cars were released, one by one, onto the tour route. For the next five hours drivers traversed a 30-mile route, making occasional stops at designated places of interest along the way. Among these were Ladew Topiary Gardens, Boordy Vineyards, Oregon Ridge Nature Center, and Prigel’s Creamery, a family farm that serves up outstanding ice cream treats.

Perhaps the most interesting attraction was a private automobile collection. This one is eclectic, containing everything from Model A Fords to 1960’s European and British sports cars, along with some early racing cars. There’s even an Isetta, a Fiat 500 and a customized tow truck nicknamed “Tow-Mater”.

At 4:30 PM, after the driving portion of the tour had ended, a buffet dinner was served at Friendly Farm Restaurant in Upperco, Maryland to a crowd of 64. As is the custom for Orphan Car Tours, the direction sheets had been sprinkled with questions about sights glimpsed along the route, in order to test the observational abilities of drivers and passengers. After the meal, prizes were awarded to those who had answered the most questions correctly. First place went to Randy and Sharon Fryer of Monkton, Md.; second place was awarded to John and Vivian Czajkowski of Odenton, Md.; third place was won by Harley and Carol Smith of Annapolis. This year’s Hard Luck Award went to Tom Cox of Woodstock, Md., whose car stalled while idling in the long line of cars waiting to start the tour. The Long Distance Award was given to Fred and Nina Hammer, who drove their 1966 Mercury Comet Cylone convertible from State College, PA.

Cars taking the tour ranged in model years from 1928 to 1993, with a nice sampling of cars from the ’30’s through the ’60’s. Automotive marques included AMC (AMX, Hornet, Marlin, Rambler), Corvair, DeSoto, Edsel, Henry J, Kaiser, Mercury (Comet and Cougar), Morris, Packard, Plymouth (Valiant), Pontiac, Studebaker (including Hawk and Lark), Terraplane and Triumph. There were also two Hupmobiles – a 1928 from Nevada and a 1933 from New Jersey – whose owners had paused to take in the Orphan Tour on their way to the Hupmobile National Meet in Staunton, Virginia.

The directors of this year’s tour were Ross Miller and Bob Godwin. Ross had laid out several tours in previous years and Bob and his wife Phyllis had been frequent past winners of the “observational” contest. Assisting with the Tour were Harley Smith, Bill and Susan Johnson and Jon Battle. Mike Bianco facilitated one of the stops along the way.

The Orphan Car Tour is an annual event designed to encourage the driving enjoyment of antique “orphans”, which the Tour defines as vehicles at least 25 years old which were produced either by now-defunct manufacturers or by the discontinued divisions of still-existing companies. Each year it moves to a different location in the greater Baltimore- Washington area. It is sponsored by six local chapters or regions of national “orphan” clubs: Mid-Atlantic Packards (a region of The Packard Club); the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club; the Potomac Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club; the Potomac Ramblers (an affiliate of the AMO and AMCRC); the DeSoto Owners Club of Maryland; the Keystone Region Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club. The Tour maintains a website at www.orphancartour.org/.

In 2007 at the 50th Anniversary of the Edsel in Dearborn, Mich., Chief Stylist Roy Brown (right) visited with another Edsel alum, C. Gayle Warnock, head of PR for the Edsel Division.

By Phil Skinner

It is considered one of the biggest automotive flops to ever come off any assembly line, but to those who own, drive and restore an Edsel automobile, it is a beautiful creature, designed by a truly talented man, Roy Brown. On Sunday, Feb. 24, Brown, at the age of 96, died near his home of the past 45 years in Brooklyn, Mich.

Brown came to work for Ford Motor Company in the late 1940s and his talents were recognized. He worked on a number of special cars and was a major force in the design of the famous Ford Futura show car that would eventually be turned into the original Batmobile.

In 1954 he was tapped to become the chief of styling for the new E-car being developed by Ford’s Special Products Division. Taking a different approach to design, he wanted this new vehicle to be recognizable from a block away. His team noticed all the modern cars looked remarkably the same — a horizontal grille, and headlight placed in the front of the fenders. While he had some basic package restrictions, the front-end design was open for development and the center vertical grille flanked by a pair of horizontal grilles was soon established at the front of this new E-car.

Brown’s design team pushed for the use of the name Ventura and the “V” theme was used heavily in the trim and logos on early studies, mock-ups and even to the prototype stage. As with many people involved with the project, he and his team didn’t particularly care for the name Edsel when the car was officially named on Nov. 19, 1956, but the crew created all the lettering and final logos in just a couple of days.

The 1958 Edsels received one of the biggest announcement programs ever seen in the industry, but the front-end styling was controversial to say the least. However, as Brown told this writer, “try and find a bad line on it, you can’t.”

Brown’s involvement with the Edsel began at the start of the project and, by the time the 1958 models had hit the show room floor, final touches were being added to the 1959 models, which were toned down a bit in some of the design elements.

After the Edsel was met with market resistance, Brown was transferred to other design concerns, first in the Lincoln-Mercury Division and eventually to England, where he was the design leader behind several very popular British Fords, including the highly sought after Cortina. Some of his design elements from the Edsel can be found on both British- and German-built Ford products. Brown once said, “In the long run, I made a lot more money for Ford Motor Company than the Edsel ever lost.”

As the popularity of the Edsel grew as a collectible, Brown was considered the “father of the Edsel,” and along with his son Reggie, attended a number of Edsel meets across the country. He even produced several limited pieces of artwork depicting his ideas towards a modern interpretation of what the Edsel would look like in modern times.

Always an artist and a true gentleman, Roy Brown will be remembered by the fans of not only the Edsel, but the Ford Cortina and even as the man who really created the basis for the popular Batmobile.

Michigan Introduces Bill to Expand Use of Historic Vehicles

Michigan, the birthplace to many of the collector cars we cherish, has introduced legislation (S.B. 1146) that would amend the state’s current law governing historic motor vehicles to permit their unlimited use as “exhibition” vehicles the entire month of August each year was introduced in Michigan by Senator Mike Kowall. Under current Michigan law, use of historic vehicles is limited to participation in club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, and similar uses, including mechanical testing, but not for general transportation.

We Urge You to Contact Members of the Senate Committee on Transportation (List Below) in Support of S.B. 1146

· S.B. 1146 will provide Michigan historic vehicle owners the opportunity to enjoy recreational driving in the month of August in addition to the other sanctioned uses.

· S.B. 1146 provides added incentive to owners of qualifying historic vehicles (more than 25-years old) to register as “historic.”

Please contact members of the Michigan Senate Transportation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their support of S.B. 1146. Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org. Thank you for your assistance.

Phil Skinner reporting

In May of 2002, Rod Egan and John Kruse set out on a daring adventure, establishing their own auction house, World Wide Auction Group, and conducting their first sale in a field just outside of Houston-suburb Katy, Texas. Just minutes before the first car was set to run over the block, a deluge hit the area with over two inches of rain flooding the field and sales tent. The start time was pushed back, everyone worked together and history was made as World Wide’s first event was declared a success. A bit soggy, but a success.

Since that first event nine years ago, Egan and Kruse have witnessed a lot of water crossing under the bridge. But after their 2011 edition of the Houston Classic held at the Keels And Wheels Concours in Seabrook, Texas, it appears that their bridge has a solid foundation and is quite secure.

On April, 30, 129 lots crossed the auction block in a spacious, air-conditioned tent. When the declared sales were tallied, the figures were impressive. Successful bids were seen on 95 of those 129 lots for a 73.6 percent sell-through rating. The dollar figures also appeared strong, with $4,288,250 on the hammer, on top of which a 10 percent buyer’s premium was added for a sale total of $4,717,075.

This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS convertible, equipped with the LS6 454-cid V-8, sold for $215,000 at WorldWide’s Houston auction. (Phil Skinner photo)

A wide assortment of vehicles were offered ranging from a 1909 Hupmobile that sold for $17,500, to several performance vehicles including a rare R-code ’69 Ford Mustang convertible equipped with the Cobra Jet 428-cid V-8 that sold for $130,000.

Muscle cars seemed to be picking up interest again, but were still below values from four to five years ago as evidenced by a ’70 Chevrolet Chevelle SS convertible, equipped with a numbers-matching LS6 454-cid/450-hp V-8, declared sold at $215,000, which was also the top-dollar sale in Houston.

Among the unusual offerings was a rare “Tropical Cabriolet” BMW Isetta 300 that was called sold at $38,000 and a solid, unrestored ’67 Volkswagen “Walk-Though/Barn Door” van that went to a new owner for $31,000.

“We are pleased with the results of today’s sale,” John Kruse told Old Cars Weekly shortly after the sale had ended. “We had excellent response from consignors for great cars and lots of enthusiastic bidders, which is encouraging. There are also a couple of deals we are real close on getting put together, so our numbers will be stronger than ever.”

This auction is held in conjunction with the Keels And Wheels Concours d’Elegance at the Lakewood Yacht Club. Among the notable no-sales of this event was a highly documented 1970 Plymouth Hemi ’Cuda convertible featuring a restoration in black, with a proper date-coded block. It was a no-sale at $1,400,000, but was rumored to be one of the cars that was undergoing post-sale negotiations.
