The market for trucks of all shapes and sizes — particularly American lighty-duty pickups and SUVs from the 1960s through the 90s — has gone through the roof in recent years. This 1964 Land Rover is probably a bit of a mystery truck for most enthusiasts, so we’ll be interested to see what this baby sells for. It’s listed on Bring A Trailer and bidding was still at a paltry $8,100 at press time.

According to the ad, “This 1964 Land Rover 88 Series IIA was acquired by the current owner in 2019 and later imported to the US from Colombia in 2023. Work prior to importation included overhauling the 2.25-liter gasoline inline-four, servicing the four-speed manual transmission, refinishing the truck in blue, and replacing components for the steering and suspension systems. The truck is equipped with a dual-range transfer case and a removable white hardtop with a tropical roof in addition to 16″ steel wheels, manually locking front hubs, a hood-mounted spare tire, a tow jaw, a split-front bench, and center-facing rear bench seats. This 88 Series IIA is now offered on dealer consignment with a Colorado title.”

The fact that the top comes off is what has us sold! We’re thinking Bronco roadster all the way here. This truck would be a ton of fun in the summer time, and would certainly be a topic of conversation at local car shows and cruise-in, because most people have probably never seen one.

What would we do with a right-hand-drive 1972 Land Rover pickup with canvas on the back? We have not idea whatsoever — maybe just roll into the closest KOA, throw some shrimp on the barbie and sleep out under the stars. Either that, or look for a military vehicle convoy to jump in because this thing would look at home there, too.

Regardless, this pickup would get lots of attention and seems like it would be a blast to bomb around in. It’s for sale in Oregon on Craigslist is being billed as a very original, almost untouched 49-year-old survivor. We’re not sure we’ve ever seen one quite like it person, which is reason enough to want it. It’s equipped with a 2.25-liter petrol engine, which is a inline little-four cylinder probably good for about 75 hp. It’s got a 3/4 canvas top, new tires and brakes, “period correct NATO wheels”, stone guards on the headlights and a “beefy heavy duty Salisbury rear end, similar strength to a Dana 60. These Series trucks were bred for farm work!”, according to the seller.

The Saratoga Automobile Museum invites you to the 23rd Greenwich Concours d’Elegance Bus Trip on Sunday, June 3, 2018. 

2018 will be a celebration of Briggs Cunningham at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance with a special display of Cunningham production cars and team race cars. As a special tribute, they will have all of the Cunningham cars displayed along the waterfront on Sunday.

On Sunday, a special display of Jaguars, with a focus on the prewar SS Cars, prewar MGs, and competition motorcycles will be shown. Bonhams has been selected by the estate of Carroll Shelby to offer for sale two dozen cars from the personal collection of the late racer and designer. The Bonhams auction begins at noon on Sunday and requires a separate admission – or you can watch through the open side of the tent.

Over the concours weekend David Hobbs will be signing his memoir, Hobbo, in the Road & Track tent. Wayne Carini will be filming an episode of Chasing Classic Cars and hosting a presentation of special cars on the field.

Surrounding the show field will be displays of new cars, including BMW, Cadillac, Lincoln, Tesla, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Karma and Miller Motorcars – with Ferrari, Bugatti, Pagani, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, McLaren, Bentley and Maserati. There are even opportunities to test drive some of these amazing new vehicles. We will also have incredible yachts displayed at the Delamar Hotel docks.

For years the whereabouts of this launch Land Rover was a mystery. The demonstration vehicle from the Amsterdam show was last on the road in the 1960s, after which it spent 20 years in a Welsh field before being bought as a restoration project; it then lay languishing unfinished in a garden. Following its surprise discovery just a few miles outside of Solihull, UK – where the car was first built – the experts at Jaguar Land Rover Classic spent months researching in company archives to unravel its ownership history and confirm its provenance.

The team behind the successful Land Rover Series I Reborn program, which allows customers to own a slice of Land Rover history with meticulously restored Series Is, will now embark on their most challenging project yet: a year-long mission to preserve this historically significant prototype and enable it to be driven again.

Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic Director, said:“This Land Rover is an irreplaceable piece of world automotive history and is as historically important as ‘Huey’, the first pre-production Land Rover. Beginning its sympathetic restoration here at Classic Works, where we can ensure it’s put back together precisely as it’s meant to be, is a fitting way to start Land Rover’s 70th anniversary year.

“There is something charming about the fact that exactly 70 years ago this vehicle would have been undergoing its final adjustments before being prepared for the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show launch – where the world first saw the shape that’s now immediately recognized as a Land Rover.”

The Jaguar Land Rover Classic team will follow a dedicated process to restore the launch vehicle, which has a lot of special features that are unique to the 48 pre-production Land Rovers that were produced prior to the mass production vehicles, such as thicker aluminum alloy body panels, a galvanized chassis and a removable rear tub. The patina of its components will be preserved, including the original Light Green paint applied in 1948.

Previous owners of this historic vehicle are being invited to Jaguar Land Rover’s Classic Works facility to share their experiences and to witness its loving restoration.

This landmark project, representing the earliest beginnings of the Land Rover story – which led to more than 67 years of continuous production of iconic Series I to Defender vehicles at Solihull – is the first in a series of stories and events that will celebrate the past, present and future of Land Rover throughout 2018. Hershey, PA – It’s time for some Off-Road adventure this summer at the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum as they feature their newest exhibit “Early Off-Roaders” celebrating the fun and adventure of these early SUVs including the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Bronco and the 75th Anniversary of the Jeep. This off-road adventure runs from May 21 – October 15, 2016.

Sport Utility Vehicles today are often more “luxury” than sport or utility. Plush heated leather seats, automatic four-wheel-drive and power everything are the norm and often outsell the bread-and-butter sedans. Most never go off the pavement.

Years ago, it was a completely different mindset. Our world famous Jeep and the British Land Rover were borne from necessity. A military needed a rugged, capable vehicle to get from Point A to Point B when no roads connected the two. Farmers, ranchers, hunters and guides were desperate for something to reach places not on the map. Just ask Marlin Perkins from “Wild Kingdom”! Off-road traction and keen mechanical survival skills were more important than doors, heaters, carpeting or other ‘creature comforts’.

The AACA Museum salutes these icons and the vehicles begat from them. Ford GP-No.1, a prototype for a light, rugged four-wheel-drive vehicle for reconnaissance and other military use, was delivered to the Army for tests Nov. 23, 1940. Built by Ford, Willys and Bantam, this rugged vehicle became the Jeep we all know today.

The first generation Ford Bronco, introduced in 1966, had a twelve-year run with a huge cult following and later became infamous as O.J. Simpson led the LA police on the world’s slowest chase. Diminutive offerings from Asia such as the Suzuki Brute emerged as the icons grew in size. All told, these early simplistic vehicles changed the way the world traveled to the far reaches of the globe.

Rockers exhibit on view through October 15th. The company doesn’t plan to restore just any truck, however. An expert team searched worldwide for the best, most original examples. The restoration teams will meld customer specifications to each of the 25 hand-picked trucks. Buyers can specify one of five period finishes, including light green, bronze green, RAF blue, dove grey, and poppy red. They will cost between £60,000 and £80,000 depending on whether it’s an 80-inch or 86-inch chassis model.

Customers will be able to select their preferred base vehicle in conjunction with Land Rover Classic’s restoration team, and they will be able to follow the car’s restoration from start to finish at Land Rover’s new Classic workshop at the original Defender factory in Solihull. Many experienced workers from the old Defender production line are contributing to the restoration of the 25 Series 1 cars. All work will be carried out with original, or, where necessary, recreated parts. The process will take between six to nine months per individual vehicle. Land Rover is guaranteeing each vehicle with a factory warranty, spanning 12 months and 12,000 miles.

According to Tony O’Keeffe of Jaguar Land Rover Classic (a division of JLR’s Special Operations), once the 25 “new” Defenders are completed, the workshop would take in customers’ own cars for restoration.
