<p>In 1968, Bob Mannel began his search for his first Fairlane. A friend had provided him with a 1963 Ford Buyer’s Digest, which showcased all the Fairlane models and available engine options for that year. Among the illustrations, the depiction of a High Performance 289-4V engine caught Bob’s eye and sparked a lasting fascination with this particular powerplant.</p>

<p>The following clip dated Aug. 5, 1927, may be the earliest notable news appearance of the new Model A Ford. The clip was recently found by Bob Gardner in his search of history. He wanted it to be shared as a forgotten milestone relative to American automotive advancement. </p>

<p>Cars conceived as quick responses to competitors’ designs aren’t always memorable. However, Ford succeeded surprisingly well in 1950 when it came up with the Crestliner, a stopgap model set apart by careful application of trim.</p>

<p>“Ask the Man Who owns One” was Packard’s dominant phrase that remained vibrant for more than half a century in the car industry. The slogan-turned-motto was embeded in the company’s formative days in Warren, Ohio, as the 20th centrury was dawning. Although the Packard automobile faded from the market in the 1950s, it seems the memory of the motto will never retire among car collectors. It is classic. </p>

<p>Since 1958, activities over Labor Day weekend in Auburn, Ind., have centered on three of the most prestigious brands of automobiles ever produced in the United States: Auburn, Cord and the legendary Duesenberg. Starting in 1971, a new feature was added to this multi-day event with a collector car auction where these Classics were put on the block. During the first year, the biggest news was that a Duesenberg Model J was bid to the amazing figure of $270,000, which was not enough to meet the reserve. Since that time, and every year since, even during the pandemic in 2020, one or more auction house has offered a prestigious line-up of cars for sale.</p>



<p>Since 2006, Worldwide Auctioneers, headquartered in Auburn, has conducted a sale with carefully curated vehicles for the discerning bidder and collector. And for the last several years, Worldwide has been conducting its sale at its expansive and modern facility in the Kruse Plaza where their home offices are located.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>Francis Tuttle Technology Center</em> &#8211; Automotive students at Francis Tuttle Technology Center got a firsthand look at the history of cars thanks to the local Model A club.</p>



<p>The OKC Model A Restorers Group (OKCMARC) brought five of the classic cars to students at the Rockwell Campus on Monday, May 5. Once inside the training garages, students in the Automotive Service Technology program put the vehicles up on lifts and talked to their owners about what it’s like to restore a piece of automotive history.</p>



<p><em>“You don’t get cars like that here a lot,” student Austin Kelser said. “The fact that they run so well is amazing. You realize the amount of work that has to go into them.”</em></p>

<p>For the Francis Tuttle students, getting an inside look at the old cars was a unique history lesson. While the general function of vehicles remains the same, they gained a unique perspective of how far the technology has come along in almost 100 years.</p>



<p><em>“To really understand modern cars, it helps to understand how the technology worked in the earliest automobiles,” Will Langford, OKCMARC President, said. “Driving a modern car is, in some ways, just another thing you do. But driving these cars is like its own verb. It’s an activity in and of itself.”</em></p>



<p>Model A’s were produced from 1927 to 1931 and they were considered Ford’s second most popular car after the success of the Model T. Restorers bring the cars up to their former glory or keep them that way, which requires plenty of maintenance and care.</p>



<p>Langford said restorers are happy to put in the work because every car comes with a unique story. One of the Model A owners at Francis Tuttle on Monday restored a car that his grandfather passed down to him, and another drove a Model A as his first car when he was 16.</p>

<p>Kelser said he is a morning student at Francis Tuttle but came back in the afternoon just to get a look at the Model A’s. It reminded him of what got him interested in automobiles in the first place.</p>



<p><em>“They would always hold air and auto shows at the airport in Bethany, and my grandpa would always take me to those,” he said. “It reminded me of that. Looking at the old cars there, it kind of caught my eye and I decided that’s what I wanted to do.”</em></p>



<p>Francis Tuttle has Automotive Service Technology programs at its Reno, Rockwell, and Danforth Campuses. Students train on many ways to service cars and trucks, and they graduate with one or several professional certifications to help them earn a job in the industry.</p>



<p>OKCMARC encourages its members to acquire, restore, preserve, exhibit and make use of the Model A Ford and, most importantly, to enjoy the fellowship of other Model A Ford owners in the area and around the world.</p>

<p>&#8220;This is a&nbsp;rather battered old car that I found and purchased 62 years ago when I was 14 years old. This Model A has gone through several stages of repair, refurbishment, and restoration over the years. It&#8217;s still in its original condition in some areas, it continues to be used every week for local transportation.&#8221;</p>

<p>It was 1962 in Tucumcari New Mexico that Rod Dickinson&#8217;s father let him buy an old model A.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Rod was 15 or 16 years old then.</p>



<p>The car was still sitting on its original 19&#8243; wheels with stock tires, but it was orange with an all over 1/4&#8243; pinstripe. The Tijuana tuck &#8216;n roll interior was done in Clovis NM and it had chrome garnish moldings&#8230;Exactly what Rod wanted, a perfect start to a hot rod. His father loved him and did not want to take a chance at Rod getting hurt so he said no there would be V8 engine swap, and put an Oldsmobile insert in that flimsy wood top.</p>

<p>Rod drove the car for years that way. His father opened a Western wear store and used the Model A in parades.</p>



<p>Rod is now 74 years old and still lives in Tucumcari. Along the way, Rod had 2 kids and one of the kids ended up with this model A; he lived in Phoenix, Arizona. Unfortunately, this son of Rod had a wreck in his family&#8217;s minivan and had to sell the family&#8217;s little orange model A to fund the minivan repairs. This gets us up to 2017 in Phoenix where Daniel Shircliff steps in to the picture.</p>

<p>Daniel, who is a professional glass blower, musician and semi pro skateboarder who never got his drivers license until he was 39 years old.&nbsp;He also joined a Southern California hot rod club and a Phoenix area hot rod club to learn the history of rodding and how to disassemble and reassemble a car correctly. One of his club mates told Daniel about an orange Model A for sale. He went to look at the car and saw a ton of potential.</p>



<p>Daniel did not touch the body, but Rod&#8217;s son told him Rod had always wanted a 265 Chevy with 3 deuces installed. So Daniel followed through with that early dream. He also built a boxed model A frame and did all the suspension and &#8217;40 Ford brake work. Always keeping in mind an early &#8217;60s build with 4 Moon polished and etched dishes it easily becomes a late 50 hot rod.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Personally, I love the cheater slick with polished kidney bean wheels. It reminds me of a young kid that could not make up his mind what wheels he wanted to run on his Revell model car. I used to have a spare box of parts for my model cars, and I was always changing around the look.</p>

<p>This car is wonderful to drive, and Daniel built it to drive as it appears in the Youtube linked video racing at Santa Barbara 2019 Drags and then driving back to Phoenix. The orange Model A was the poster car for those super successful TROG Drags. The car can be seen at the 4:15 mark of the video.</p>

<p>Daniel sold me the car in late 2019 after he found out he and his wife were expecting their first child.&nbsp;</p>



<p>This particular model A hot rod is so fun and great to drive it is really a super efficient little car and I am very proud to be its current keeper.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Driving a 1934 Ford three-window coupe from an AACA Hershey flea market space to the show field would be less than remarkable if not for one detail.</p>



<p>“We took the shortcut way to get over to the show field,” said the Ford’s owner, Don Weir of York, Pa., “so it’s probably about a mile altogether, other than backing it in and out of the barn.”</p>



<p>The part about the barn makes all the difference, though, as the car had been parked there for a long, long time.</p>



<p>“We bought it in Binghamton, New York, in 1956,” Weir explained. “A buddy of mine bought it in ’56 and I went to New York with him and helped him take it back to Philadelphia. In ’58, I bought it from him.</p>

<p>“It’s been sitting in my barn since 1958 until we pulled it out on August 3 of (2019).”</p>



<p>The friend who’d bought it in Binghamton, he said, was a serious fan of such Fords and understandably so.</p>



<p><strong>Building a ‘better’ Ford</strong></p>



<p>Ford by 1934 had put its too-long reliance on the Model T behind it. While the Model T that had been introduced in late 1908 had done more than any contemporary car to make personal transportation a reality for countless Americans, it failed to evolve along with the world it had helped to create. Its production ended in 1927 and in spite of the fact that it been constantly upgraded and improved during its lifetime, it remained a vehicle designed with 1908’s needs in mind.</p>



<p>The Model T was beloved then as it is today, but it was embarrassingly obsolete and so the Model A that arrived for 1928 was much more modern. Its predecessor’s planetary-gear two-speed manual transmission and the service brake that acted on the transmission were gone, replaced by what had now become the industry standard: a three-speed manual sliding-gear transmission and brakes on all four wheels. The final Model Ts had worn styling upgrades that helped them to look current, if not fresh, but the Model A’s styling was contemporary and attractive. Its 200-cid flathead four produced 40 hp and while that was a commendable improvement from the Model T’s 176.7-cid four with its 20 hp, it was still a four.</p>



<p>The four-cylinder Chevrolet outsold Ford in the 1927 model year for the first time, no doubt in part because Ford shut down to retool for much of the year. Then Chevy switched to a six for 1929. The cheapest Chevys that year were the six-cylinder $525 roadster and touring while the least-expensive Ford was the four-cylinder $450 roadster. Chevrolet advertised that it now offered “a six in the price range of a four” and although Ford wasn’t the only four-cylinder car then on the market, the point was made. In case anyone didn’t get it, the ad noted that “Chevrolet engineers knew that the six-cylinder motor is inherently the more perfectly balanced motor — the ideal power plant to meet the growing public demand for greater reserve power, faster getaway and, above all — smooth, quiet performance.”</p>

<p>Ford’s response came in 1932 with the V-8. The new car was an evolutionary step away from the Model A thanks to a general softening of the lines and was “the greatest thrill in motoring” thanks to its new engine. The 221-cid flathead V-8 developed 65 hp and Ford promised that the driver would notice the “flashing acceleration, the ease with which (the car) will reach its maximum speed, and hold it.” The new 221, it explained, “for the first time brings into the lowest price field the V-8 type of engine, which has previously been confined almost exclusively to cars selling in the highest price range.” In a shot at Chevrolet’s claim of “smooth, quiet performance” from its “more perfectly balanced motor,” Ford added that “one of the important characteristics of the V-type engine is its smooth operation.”</p>



<p>While Ford’s earliest V-8s were not without problems, Ford worked to correct them and soon had a winner. Its descendants would be in production two decades later, but more immediately, the V-8 for 1933 was bumped up to 75 hp in bodies that “are new and distinctive in their graceful streamlines and they express the new mode in motor car designing. In every detail, you see evidence of a carefully planned harmony of line, proportion and direction.” It was more than puffery, as the new Ford replaced much of the 1932 model’s boxy vertical theme with a gently sloping look. The softening that had appeared one year earlier was enhanced and the 1933 Ford represented an almost-complete break with the styles of previous Fords.</p>



<p>Not surprisingly, although the V-8 was boosted to 85 hp for 1934, the Ford’s body was only mildly updated with changes including a slightly different grille, reconfigured hood-side louvers and smaller headlamps and cowl lamps. It was “the ideal choice for all the people, everywhere” and “the complete answer to your motoring needs.” There might have been some truth in that rather broad claim, because like most prewar Fords, the 1933 and ’34 became popular with collectors (and hot rodders) long ago. Clearly, Weir’s friend was one of those who fell hopelessly under the spell.</p>

<p><strong>The first drive&#8230;61 years later</strong></p>



<p>“At one point,” Weir recalled, “he had four three-window coupes in his barn and two five-window coupes. He just liked to buy Fords and he had a place to store them. There were three of us who all ran around together and we all played around with cars, but he had the most money, so he bought them first.”</p>



<p>His friend with the storage space might not have driven the car shown here and it’s possible that he never even heard it run, Weir said, adding that when he bought the Ford from him in 1958, he was sure that he wouldn’t end up in a similar situation.</p>



<p>“My original plan was to restore it,” he explained, “but then I got married in ’63 and, of course, when that happens, a lot of plans are changed&#8230; This got put in the back of the barn and as you buy other cars, they go in front of the one that’s in the back of the barn and so you can’t get to it.”</p>



<p>Only a few friends knew he had it, so there was no stream of questions about it and the car might have stayed in the back of the barn if not for Weir’s second plan for the Ford. This time, the plan is to let it go.</p>



<p>“I know that nothing happens overnight,” Weir said, “so I figure it’s time to get started and move some stuff. Fortunately for somebody else, unfortunately for me, this was the one we pulled out first.”</p>



<p>He won’t be disappointed if this plan falls through like his first plan did. Should that happen, there’s actually a third plan.</p>



<p>“I would think that it’s probably about as good as it looks,” he said. “It’s not perfect. It’s going to need some loving care, but if I kept it, it would stay the way it is. I think it’s a good preservation car, it’s a good survivor and it’s a good reference car for anybody who’s trying to restore one and wants to know what’s right and what’s wrong, so I would keep it the way it is.”</p>



<p>The car might in fact be better than it looks, given that he pulled it out of the barn at noon on a Saturday and had it running by noon on Sunday. Swapping out the gas tank for one from another Ford was the only major work and after that, it was ready. It went on and off of the trailer and then from the Hershey flea market to the show field. It was the first time in the 61 years since he’d bought it that Weir was able to drive it on a road.</p>



<p>“That’s why it would be really nice to keep it,” he said, “but I’ve got three cars torn apart in the shop right now.”</p>



<p>The difference between three disassembled cars and four might not seem like a big one.</p>



<p>“Well, that’s true,” Weir conceded. “That’s true until you start mixing up the parts.”</p>

<p>Steve Isola spotted this 1929 Model A Ford for sale in the tiny town of Sarona in northwest Wisconsin. “It is surprisingly complete, although rusty looking, with some tack welding done on the roof,” Isola noted. “It is a real steel, honest to goodness, nearly complete Model A coupe, right down to the wheels. Just missing the trunk lid.”</p>

<p><em><strong>A. </strong></em>It may also have been to mark genuine Chevrolet parts. Ford had a similar practice with the familiar script as well as the Ford oval. Years ago I was researching the 1930s Ford-based Jensen cars built in England. An owner who had restored one told of finding a mysterious smooth area on his brake backing plates, where something had been ground off. He owned a genuine Ford of the era, so he compared backing plates. On the Ford car he found the Ford script in that location; it had been purposely removed on the Jensen. During that period, Jensen acknowledged only that its cars used “various units which are manufactured outside the Jensen factory…”</p>



<p><em><strong>Q. </strong></em>I am starting to futz with a 1931 Ford Model A. I have a vision for it to look like a low-buck hot rod of the mid-1950s. I want a radiator cap/hood ornament that does something by wind action as I drive. As a kid, I remember seeing one with an airplane and the propeller spun when you would drive. I can’t seem to find it from any Model A supplier. The only one I have found on eBay was modern and home-made. I prefer an older one or one that is a copy of the original type. I put a thermostat gauge in the cab so I don’t need a thermostat on the radiator cap. Any ideas or leads?<br><em>— Hyman Roth, Kansas</em></p>



<p><em><strong>A. </strong></em>My bible on radiator and hood ornaments is the late William C. Williams’ “Motoring Mascots of the World,” first published in 1977 and updated in 1990. It shows two airplanes of the type you describe, one a bi-plane and the other a monoplane, both with free-spinning propellers. Both are described as “painted tin.” The source notation says simply “American.” The only advice I can give is “keep looking.”</p>



<p>I do have some thoughts on Model A radiator ornaments, however. Two years ago I purchased a restored 1930 standard roadster. The previous owner had added a few accessories, like a clock-mirror and a MotoMeter, that I thought were excessive for a Model A. Back in the day, when Model As were in common everyday use, only “show-offs” dressed them up. I felt that the MotoMeter detracted from the appearance of the car, and when driving I never saw the temperature rise above the low end of the scale. I’ve been messing with Model As on and off for more than 60 years. In my experience, if a Model A’s radiator core is sound and unobstructed, a temperature gauge is superfluous.</p>



<p>I bought a reproduction twist-lock cap for 1930-31 models from one of the many Model A parts suppliers. Made in Asia, it appeared to be a very solid and quality product. Once I had removed the MotoMeter cap, however, I found the new cap would not properly “snick” into place. It looked OK, but I was afraid it would vibrate loose on the road.</p>



<p>I consulted one of the Model A forums on the internet. It seems a lot of owners have encountered this problem, and members suggested varying causes and remedies. Some blamed a poor reproduction radiator, with a short neck. Others felt the radiator mounting was at fault. Still others had patiently cut a sliver off the bottom of the cap to make it fit. It finally occurred to me that the well-made cap might actually be the problem. As it happens, I have a nearly identical unrestored 1930 standard roadster that’s a family heirloom. It needs a lot of work, and my impatience led to buying the restored car. I tried the original cap on my restored car and it fits perfectly. The difference is in the locking mechanism. The repro cap has a heavy metal tab that is supposed to engage the twist lock part of the radiator neck. The original cap has spring steel instead.</p>

<p>Indiana’s reputation in early auto manufacturing proudly claims Stutz, Duesenberg, Auburn, Cord, Studebaker, and many more. Rarely mentioned is the four-story Ford Assembly Branch at Washington and Oriental that generated 600,000 cars and trucks between 1915 and 1932.</p>



<p>After 1932, Ford used the plant for parts service and auto sales into the 1940s. Some may remember it as a Mallory factory. Mallory sold the property to Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), which used less than half the building for receiving and storage. It landed on Indiana Landmarks’ 10 Most Endangered list in 2016.</p>

<p>Huge industrial windows that once flooded the interior with natural light have been boarded or removed and roof leaks leave standing water on upper floors. IPS is selling the plant to TWG Development whose repurposing will reopen and restore blocked windows and fill the building with apartments, offices, and retail.</p>



<p>The tour will be self-guided, with volunteers stationed to interpret the spaces and answer questions, including representatives of TWG who will talk about the renovation.</p>



<p>If you own a vintage Ford—Model T, Model A, or any other—drive it to the tour. The parking lot will become an impromptu car show!</p>

<p>The late Paul Newman wrote the foreword to Russ Banham’s lavishly illustrated book,&nbsp;<em>The Ford Century: Ford Motor Company and the Innovations that Shaped the World</em>, a high-wattage endorsement from a film celebrity and celebrated car guy. The L.A.-based&nbsp;<strong>Banham will deliver a talk about Ford’s historic innovations, including its regional assembly plants like the one on Washington Street in Indianapolis,</strong>built in 1914 to turn out Model T and Model A automobiles.</p>



<p><a target="_blank" href="http://www.russbanham.com/">Russ Banham,</a>&nbsp;author of over twenty-five books on a wide range of topics, began his career as a journalist at The Journal of Commerce, a New York-based Knight-Ridder daily business newspaper that nominated him for a Pulitzer Prize in 1987, honoring a series of articles he wrote about the “bugged” U.S. Embassy in Moscow. In addition to his award-winning history of the Ford Motor Company, Banham’s books include&nbsp;<em>Higher,</em>&nbsp;a history of Boeing and the U.S. aviation industry;&nbsp;<em>Rocky Mountain Legend,</em>&nbsp;a chronicle of the Coors brewing dynasty; and&nbsp;<em>Wanderlust,</em>&nbsp;tales and history of Airstream travel trailers.</p>
