The man on the left is my great uncle, James Walker, with an unknown associate. Uncle James was stricken with polio as a child and used a low scooter that he pushed with his hands to get around. Later he used leg braces and crutches which you can see in the second photo. He worked as a jeweler and watch repairman in Gulf Port, Mississippi most of his adult life.

These photos were probably taken about 1930 in Rock Hill, SC where he grew up. From my research, the car appears to be a 1925-1927 Model T Coupe. I’m not sure if the car was my uncle’s or his friend’s. If it were my uncle’s, it would be interesting to know if the controls were modified to compensate for his disability. I don’t know if that was even possible at that time. It’s more likely he had drivers take him home from Mississippi to South Carolina, and this photo was from one of those trips.

If you would like your car featured in Old Cars Reader Photos email us your photos and a description to oldcars@aimmediacom.

Reader Robb Landy shares these photos of his great-uncles, Mike, Joe and Toni Landy, shown in front of the family repair garage in Mount Pleasant, Pa., sometime in the 1920s. “The building behind them was a repair garage with apartments above. The two women in the window are my great-aunt and I think their sister,” Landy says. “To the left is a beer distributor. The touring car my dad seemed to think was a late-teens Locomobile… Across the street they built a Texaco station (a car wash today), art deco style with covered bays to drive through.“

“This is my great uncle, Herman Fredrick (1877-1940). Photo taken in Harvard, Ill., in 1915,” says Mike Peters, of Sharon, Wis. “The car is a 1914 Model T touring that Herman had recently bought new. Herman had suffered from polio since the age of 4, and had very little use of his legs, so he used one crutch and one cane to walk. Model T’s are a foot-pedal-operated car, but Herman had very powerful shoulders and arms, so he simply ran the low gear, brake and reverse pedals with his cane. Cranking the car by hand would have been easy for Herman. Shortly after this photo was taken, Herman smacked the T into a tree. The T was totaled, but Herman survived. I have a ‘15 T and can relate very well to Herman’s dilemma.”

“My dad bought this new Plymouth in the spring of 1935,” says Earl Welch, of Merced, Calif. “It was a ‘demonstrator’ with 350 miles on it. It was dark blue, no accessories, not even a heater. [He] traded in a ‘26 Chevrolet touring four-door. I was 4 years old. That’s me standing on the running board next to my father. Mom is to his right and my brother is in front … We lived on a farm south of Morrisonville, Ill. I’m 88 now and this brings back good old memories.”

“This picture was taken in front of my grandparents’ home in McHenry, N.D., in about 1920,” writes Tony Zimmerman, of Kirkland, Wash. “Grandpa was always a car lover. He had one of the first 400 license plates issued in North Dakota in 1911 on a 1910 Jackson touring. This car I think is a late-teens Studebaker.” Good guess Tony! It looks to us a lot like a 1919 Studebaker Big Six. We’ll see if our readers agree!
Don Dinges shares this image of the first fire truck purchased by the town of Sublette, Ill. “The truck was a 1932 Chevrolet chassis and the fire equipment was built by the local firemen,” he says. “The water compartment is actually a gas tank from an old horse-drawn gasoline wagon. The truck is still owned by the department and looks great.”

If you were going to be handcuffed to one car for a year in 1928, a new Auburn sedan wasn’t a bad place to be. Endurance driver “Dare Devil Warner” started from Bright Bumper Sales Co. of Los Angeles in May 1928 and planned to visit “every city in the United States” during his year-long adventure, all the while in sealed handcuffs. The Auburn appears specially outfitted with a box on the running board, three non-standard headlamps, an unknown apparatus in place of the front bumper and optional Smith steel wheels.

About 10 years ago, Old Cars reader Robert Larkin Brooks discovered that his cousin was none other than E.T. Bob Gregorie, the famous Ford designer. Brooks submitted this photo of Gregorie with a unique 1935 Ford-based roadster that he designed for Edsel Ford, the third such sporty Ford-based car the two teamed up to create during the 1930s. This car was apparently designed to test the feasibility of building a sporty Ford-based car with a coachbuilt body. That did happen, the result being the 1936-’39 Jensen Ford. Edsel was said to have gifted this Ford to Gregorie, but it’s since disappeared.
