Prior to its inception in 1902, the company’s founder, Henry M. Leland, an apprentice to legendary gunsmith Samuel Colt wanted to apply key learnings of precision engineering to automobiles. As a result, Cadillac became the first American car to win the prestigious Dewar Trophy from the Royal Automobile Club of England. After receiving such high praise the company adopted the slogan “Standard of the World.”

“The Cadillac – Standard of the World exhibit at America’s Car Museum tells the story of the brand’s inception early in the twentieth century and its celebrated reputation for designing and building some of the finest, and most desirable, automobiles in the world today” said ACM Curator of Exhibitry Scot Keller.

On loan from Cadillac, the exhibit will notably feature the 2003 Cadillac Sixteen Concept, a vehicle that pays homage to early 16-cylinder models produced by the brand. Coming later in summer will also be the 2011 Cadillac Ciel Concept, a one-off vehicle featured in the 2015 movie adaptation of HBO’s Entourage television series. A few earlier models include a 1906 Cadillac Model K Tulip Touring car – an early vehicle representing the brand’s biggest year for single-cylinder cars to date – as well as 1947 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible, the first Cadillac to enter production following the close down of manufacturing during World War II.

The Summer Drive Series is one of ACM’s rotating displays, showcasing the vehicles that once adorned Route 66 during the golden age of American motoring. As demonstrated by this year’s collection of Chevys, the Museum will deliver nearly a dozen incredible examples from the brand’s early history.

“Route 66: Dream of the Mother Road has been one of our most memorable exhibits because it harkens back to the time when Americans explored the country by journeying one of the original highways in the U.S. Highway System,” said America’s Car Museum Curator of Collections, Renee Crist. “The iconic Dinah Shore ‘See the USA in Your Chevrolet’ advertising campaign from the ’50s was a fitting theme for this year’s Summer Drive Series of incredible Chevys.”

The full list of vehicles in “Route 66: See the USA in Your Chevrolet” include:

TACOMA, Wash. – America’s Car Museum (ACM) will hold a range of exceptional automotive-related happenings in Tacoma, Washington, this summer, including exclusive displays such as Steve McQueen’s Bullitt Mustang, signature events, drive-in movies, cruise-ins and vintage vehicle “Take A Spin” days as part of its lineup of activities.

Among the Museum’s unique displays, movie buffs and Steve McQueen fans can rejoice as the special Bullitt Mustang display will remain available to guests through July 14 (note: the Bullitt Mustang will be temporarily removed from May 28 to June 4 while being featured at The Friends of Steve McQueen Car and Motorcycle Show).

Additionally, exhibits such as “Cadillac – Standard of the World” and “Route 66: See the USA in Your Chevrolet” will celebrate vehicles from the golden age of motoring during the summer months.

As a member of America’s Automotive Trust (AAT), a not-for-profit organization at the center of the movement to secure America’s automotive heritage and promote the continued enjoyment of the automobile for future generations, ACM will continue to host the Trust’s Signature Events to raise funds for AAT member organizations.

AAT Signature Events:

Cars & Cigars “Miami Nights” (Aug. 2) – Cars & Cigars is back with a sizzling, flame-fueled evening of open-air cooking styles from the most celebrated chefs in the South Sound. Lighting up the night in tribute to fast cars will be Montecristo cigars and cocktails. This year, chefs will compete in a Miami cocktail showdown to win the “Cars & Cigars: Cocktail of the Year.”

Wheels & Heels Annual Gala “LIVE at the Cadillac Canteen” (Sept. 7) – Experience AAT’s largest annual fundraiser in support of its commitment to preserving America’s automotive heritage. This year’s event will revisit the Golden Age of Radio and feature a lavish cocktail reception, radio variety show, four-course dinner, live auction, the Cadillac of fireworks display and a Montecristo cigar lounge.

Returning for 2019 are ACM’s Drive-In Movies, where guests can enjoy films the old-fashioned way: from inside their cars. Three of four movies have been decided, with the final being decided via a poll on the Museum’s Facebook page.

Drive-In Movies:

Key areas of focus will include the pre-war Cadillacs that set new standards for innovation and engineering excellence.

The story continues into the post-war period when Cadillac’s established a new level of prestige and design excellence. It was the halcyon era when the words “The Cadillac of…” was an expression of products that were the best in the world.

Added emphasis will proudly highlight the brand’s second century with its reemergence as a global design and technology leader.

TACOMA, Wash. – Visitors to America’s Car Museum (ACM) in Tacoma, Washington, will be able to view one of the most iconic movie cars of all time, a 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback – the Bullitt Mustang, until July 14.

“We’re thrilled that the owner of the Bullitt Mustang agreed to let us display it through July 14,” said America’s Automotive Trust CEO David Madeira. “It’s an honor to have such a significant vehicle, the 21st listed with the Historic Vehicle Association’s National Historic Vehicle Register, available to our guests.”

“Sharing Bullitt was always the collective dream of my father and I, we spoke of it often. The continued interest in the car, as well as our family story, and the ability to share it through the display at America’s Car Museum is something I am proud of, and know my father would be too,” said Sean Kiernan, owner of the Bullitt Mustang.

“The prominence of the Bullitt Mustang cannot be overstated,” added Madeira. “It continues in a long line of memorable vehicles and displays that make the America’s Car Museum such a great destination for car and history lovers alike.”

The Bullitt Mustang display is joined by Ford’s new 2019 Mustang Bullitt edition courtesy of Northwest Ford Dealer Association, which takes many cues from the movie car including a Dark Highland Green paint scheme, subtle chrome accents on the outer edge of the wheels, grille and windows, and minimal badging featuring the Bullitt logo.

TACOMA, Wash. – One of the most iconic movie cars of all time, a 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback – the Bullitt Mustang – arrived in Tacoma, Washington on December 5, where it will be on display at America’s Car Museum (ACM) through April 25, 2019.

The Ford Mustang piloted by legendary actor and motorsports enthusiast Steve McQueen during the 1968 film Bullittleft a lasting impact on movies and pop culture since its release. In Bullitt, McQueen played the title character, a SFPD detective trying to bust a mob ring.

The 9-minute and 42-second chase scene was revolutionary for its time – putting the audience inside the vehicle while driving on actual roads and building suspense without any spoken dialogue – a film style that would later define Director Peter Yates’ vehicle chase scenes.

The authentic feel of Bullittwas achieved through a number of factors including real stunt driving, where drivers reached speeds as high as 110 mph through the streets of San Francisco, only possible because San Francisco’s Mayor Joe Alioto – who only charged one dollar for permission to film – recognized how much publicity the city would get from a McQueen movie. Rather than building lavish sets, the filmmakers were able to utilize many parts of the city as a backdrop.

“Steve McQueen was one of those rare individuals who was able to infuse his passion for motorsports directly into his films, and there’s no better example than Bullitt,” said AAT Vice Chair David Madeira. “It’s not every day that we get the chance to showcase a vehicle that has made such a lasting impact on the way cars are presented on film. It’s humbling to share the long and storied history of this Mustang with ACM guests.”

Two Mustang GT 390s were modified for the making of Bullitt – which included a dark Highland Green paint scheme, no exterior badges, scoops or spoilers and adorned with a black-mesh grille absent of Ford’s iconic pony badging. Of the two, this is the only surviving car.

While the car would live on as a daily driver for the Kiernan family, it eventually wound up being stored in their garage in Tennessee for years before being resurrected, thanks to the thoughtful recommissioning of the car from Kiernan’s son, Sean. The Bullitt Mustang, still rocking its original paint and remaining largely unmodified, was showcased at the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) nearly half a century after the movie premiered alongside a new tribute model from Ford.

Following its reemergence at NAIAS, the Bullitt Mustang became the 21st vehicle inducted into the Historic Vehicle Association’s (HVA) National Historic Vehicle Register and its documentation, photographs and history will be archived in the Library of Congress so that future generations can see the car as it stands today.

“The story of this vehicle is as unique as the car itself,” added Madeira. “We’d like to thank Sean and the HVA for giving us the opportunity to celebrate the history of one of film’s most influential cars.”

ACM will be holding a screening of Bullittand a Q&A with the car’s owner, Sean Kiernan, in late January. Details for the event will be revealed at a later time on ACM’s website, americascarmuseum.org.

TACOMA, Wash. – LeMay – America’s Car Museum (ACM) launched a crowdfunding campaign to help bring the BMW Car Club of America Foundation’s “Heroes of Bavaria – 75 Years of BMW Motorsports” collection to the Museum on May 12. The 17 iconic race cars in the display will celebrate and detail BMW’s storied motorsports legacy. Those who donate to ACM’s crowdfunding effort will be rewarded with opportunities to extend their experience beyond what’s offered by typical automotive museums.

Crowdfunding backers will enjoy benefits including passes to the exhibit’s opening celebration, limited edition posters and books, private tours of the ACM collection and the ability to “adopt-a-winner.” One lucky individual can also purchase an exclusive one-day experience at a BMW performance driving school, where they will be able to learn about the theory, physics and mechanics of performance driving.

“As proven by the extraordinary collection of race cars within Heroes of Bavaria exhibit, BMW rightfully earns the title of the ‘Ultimate Driving Machine.’ Their vehicles have been tried-and-tested on race tracks for the last 75 years,” said America’s Automotive Trust CEO Adam Langsbard. “We’re thrilled to be the first to display this unrivalled collection on the West Coast and share BMW’s many motorsports accomplishments with the hundreds of thousands guests who visit ACM each year.”

The Bavarian-themed grand opening celebration at ACMoccurs the evening of May 12.

As part of the festivities, ACM Master Collector Peter Gleason will moderate a live discussion with notable BMW figures including:

A free commemorative poster will be given to the first 150 people through the door.

For those who cannot make the evening opening, ACM Curator of Exhibitry Scot Keller will be leading an exclusive early entry Curator Talk & Tour on the morning of May 13, where he will delve into BMW’s history and provide expert insight to the remarkable vehicles on display.

“The Heroes of Bavaria exhibit celebrates the history of BMW racing by featuring noteworthy race cars beginning with the infamous 328,” said Keller. “The two-liter 328 – arguably one of the most successful sports cars of the 1930s – is just one of example of BMW’s motoring legacy, having achieved a class win in the celebrated Mille Miglia in 1938 and an overall victory in 1940.”

Other notable vehicles will include the very first 1961 700 RS, a 1972 3.0 CSL Groupe 2 Rally Car – the only one of its kind – and a 2000 Williams Formula F1 driven by Ralf Schumacher in eight total races, achieving three podium finishes.

The full collection, which rounds out the 17 total vehicles will also include:

1965 BMW 1800 TI/SA

1975 BMW 3.0 CSL Group 4 IMSA
