CARLISLE, PA – How do you engage the next generation of automotive enthusiasts in the car hobby? This question has been asked for decades. A simple answer: give them tools and let them create. For select students in the SUN Technical Institute (New Berlin, PA) Collision Repair Technology, this means an opportunity to design, build, and ultimately raise money for their school and program.

Since late 2024, SUN students have been transforming pedal cars into works of art. Their goal: build, display, and auction them at the Spring Carlisle Collector Car Auction, April 24–25, at the Carlisle Expo Center. Seven teams of two collaborated to craft these masterpieces. Four teams designed 1955 Chevys, and three created Ford Roadsters. While the cars started as basic kits, each team developed unique concepts, executed bodywork, prepared and painted the cars, and delivered unique presentations ahead of the auction.

This experience extends beyond the classroom. Once completed, the cars will be prominently displayed at the AACA Museum, Inc., in Hershey for two months before moving to the Carlisle event. The museum will host the students and their creations starting in late February.

During the Spring Carlisle event, held April 23–27 at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds, the pedal cars will take center stage at the auction. Proceeds from the sales will be donated to SUN Technical Institute’s automotive program, courtesy of Carlisle Auctions.

In addition to the auction, SUN students and their instructor, John Reeder, will explore the automotive flea market at the fairgrounds, which hosts 8,100 vendor spaces filled with millions of car parts and collectibles. The immersive experience draws nearly 100,000 automotive enthusiasts from around the world.

The journey has been documented by Carlisle Events and Carlisle Auctions on social media through photos and videos. The Carlisle team also visited SUN Technical Institute to capture the students’ progress firsthand.

“One of our team’s priorities is keeping the car hobby alive for future generations,” said Tony Cline, Director of Auction Operations. “This means investing in youth and sharing our passion with them. When Mr. Reeder proposed his idea, we were thrilled to support it. Our newest team member, Jason Ramey, spearheaded this partnership with Mr. Reeder. What began as a small initiative has grown significantly, involving students beyond Mr. Reeder’s class. We couldn’t be more proud and hope this experience creates lasting memories for the students,” added Cline.

Collision Repair Technology Instructor John Reeder expressed his gratitude: “The students and I are thrilled to partner with Carlisle Auctions on this fundraising project. I reached out with a small idea, and their team has taken it to a whole new level. In fact, it’s been so popular at the school that students from outside of my collision repair class have been able to participate and support us too. We’re excited about the direction this project is heading.”

Carlisle, PA – 300! That’s how many 1953 Corvettes were produced when what’s now known as the C1 was originally produced. Fast forward to late April in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and one of those original 300 (serial #100 to be exact), will cross the auction block on Friday, April 21. That’s right, a 1953 Corvette, one of the first 40 or so actually sold some 70 years ago, will be up for grabs as part of Carlisle Auctions’ two-day classic and collector car auction at the Carlisle Expo Center, April 20-21, 2023. Think about it. In 70 years, nearly 2 million Corvettes have been built and sold. This is the 100th ever created; talk about rarified air!

The auction starts at 12 p.m. each day and the fact that a 1953 Corvette is even crossing the block is nothing short of a big deal. The National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS), the premier authority on all things Corvette has judged only 60 ‘53s all time and rarer yet, over the last five years, only 16 ‘53s are known to have sold. Most have sold through “as seen on TV” auction houses. Currently, there’s only one other known active sale for a ’53 and its part of a non-auction/boutique dealership sale.

With this ’53, it’s the first time such an iconic and rare ride will be made available by Carlisle Auctions. Built in October of 1953, this ’53 was delivered by Tom Hoskins of Hoskins Chevrolet in Chicago to a prominent man of the time, Cyrus Rowlett (C.R.) Smith. Mr. Smith was the founder and CEO of American Airlines from 1934-1968 and again from 1973-74. Smith also served his country, both as a Major General and as the wartime deputy commander of the Air Transport Command during World War II. He also served under President Lyndon B. Johnson as the United States Secretary of Commerce. Mr. Smith is regarded as one of the titans of U.S. airline history and when he passed in 1990, was laid to rest within the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.

In addition, Mr. Smith was very close with the Roosevelt family, specifically first-lady Eleanor Roosevelt and her son Elliott. Smith aided Mrs. Roosevelt frequently with travel plans and even introduced Elliott to his second wife, serving as best man at their wedding.

While the car has changed hands multiple times since Mr. Smith’s ownership, there is meticulous documentation of its ownership record. Its engine number is 535454 and there are many original elements to the car too, including valve cover (one of 305 produced), 3836066 special Corvette cylinder head, body, and specially engineered open drive shaft two-speed power glide automatic transmission, which was all-new for the Corvette only. The ’53 also retains its original vacuum bag molded fiberglass body made by Lunn Laminates of Huntington, New York which is currently adorned by a 2019 repaint in acrylic lacquer formulated in the Delaware factory of E. I. du Pont de Nemours.

Under the trunk bulkhead is the #100, further solidifying its place in the production line. This is not a restoration piece, though it has been re-painted. It’s also won numerous awards, including as recently as 2021 when it was tapped as the NCRS’ Top Flight Award winner.

“This 1953 Corvette is an excellent unrestored/first year Corvette with full provenance,” notes Alan Blay, editor of On Solid Ground, the Solid Axle Corvette Club magazine (solidaxle.org) and columnist and historian for six-cylinder Corvettes built in 1953, 1954, and 1955. “Its body has never separated from the chassis and other than a 2019 repaint, its emulated as close as possible to the car’s original finish and appearance,” continued Blay.

“It’ll roll across the auction block with all original hardware still intact and drives as it did when it was brand new 70 years ago. In fact, its current owner still drives it and has logged about 5,000 miles in the past 18 years. This car is not a trailer queen,” concluded Blay.

The Spring Carlisle Collector Car Auction takes place in conjunction with Spring Carlisle, a five-day event that includes an automotive flea market and car corral. Spring Carlisle happens April 19-23 at the neighboring Carlisle PA Fairgrounds and welcomes nearly 100,000 guests from around the world. Carlisle Auctions will bring car buyers and sellers together for two days, while offering 400+ lots spanning decades of production. Bidders and buyers will feast on a variety of options, including classics deserving of a white-glove presentation, while other options include show-worthy gems that can still serve as a daily driver. Muscle, trucks, pre-war classics, and even automobilia; it’s all slated to cross the block April 21-22.

Also on April 21, just before the all-truck hour, an all-original 1965 Tiger Sunbeam Convertible will cross the block. The unrestored Sunbeam, a.k.a. “Baby Cobra,” has just 28,000 miles on it and features a set of rare original LAT 9 wheels, mounted on original UniRoyal Tiger Paw redline tires that are used only for show. These tires were put on the car in 1968 since the original owner had to have Tiger Paws on her Tiger. It also comes with a set of modern Mini-lite style wheels and tires.

There are many more gems like this ’65 Tiger Sunbeam and all will be available for bidding in person, on the phone or online as part of the auction. For car lovers, however; the real gifts are found within the automotive flea market of Spring Carlisle (April 20-24). Presented by eBay Motors in 2022, this event hosts a treasure-trove of car themed items, be they parts, merchandise, collectibles, signage, collector cars, and more. 

In addition to the items available within the automotive flea market, the Manufactures Midway welcomes many of the top suppliers in the automotive industry. Their displays and merchandise, mixed with the ARMO Hot Products Showcase tent, act to spotlight the latest and best new products. ARMO, which is a member of the SEMA council continues its mission at Spring Carlisle and beyond to preserve and promote the automotive restoration hobby.

Another fun element of the event comes on Friday, April 22, when Carlisle Events co-owner Bill Miller comes to the auction stage for his second bi-annual Bill Miller Auction. For a period of time starting mid-morning, Bill, with the help of the Carlisle Auctions staff, will sell off some items from his personal collection. This sale includes automobilia, collectibles, autographed items, and some pieces of Carlisle Events history. The Bill Miller Auction is free for all on-site guests to attend/participate, and all items are sold to the highest bidder with no fees attached.  Bill will also have at least one vehicle from his personal collection consigned to Carlisle Auctions’ offering, which runs in conjunction with Spring Carlisle itself.

Carlisle, PA – Every fall the automotive universe converges on Las Vegas for the pinnacle event of the hobby, the Specialty Equipment Market Association show, also known as SEMA. While SEMA isn’t “open” to the general public, it serves to showcase some of the best vehicles in the world as well as showcasing hot or new products coming onto the market. Before many of those items end up on a retailer’s shelf, they make an east coast appearance by way of Spring Carlisle (April 21-25) at the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds as part of the ARMO Hot Products Showcase.

Unlike SEMA, Spring Carlisle is open to the public and has been an annual destination event for car lovers since 1977. One of the marquee features of the spring show is the aforementioned ARMO display, centrally positioned on grounds near the stage. ARMO is short for the Automotive Restoration Market Organization and is a council of SEMA itself. ARMO directs its efforts toward preserving and promoting the automotive restoration industry and annually at Spring Carlisle, offers its showcase for the nearly 100,000 guests and thousands of vendors.

With the showcase at Spring Carlisle, show-goers can see in person the latest and greatest products coming on to the market, and with the 2020 SEMA show canceled, this will also serve as the first-time many of these items are seen in person by retailers and consumers alike. Carlisle, PA – The first event of the Carlisle Events season has come and gone; Auto Mania, an automotive flea market that kick-started the 2021 schedule at the Carlisle Expo Center. From here, the next Carlisle based event is Spring Carlisle (April 21-25), followed by six more car/truck shows and wraps up with Fall Carlisle at the end of September. While the automotive flea market events are some of the largest in the world, the specialty shows are what draw the cars, the people and fan the flames of excitement.

The Carlisle Import & Performance Nationals (May 14-15) are first up and while the international spotlight of cars is a display in and of itself, the multiple themes recently announced will be eye catching. Roll to the event in final weeks of the spring season for a Volvo celebration, 20 years of the Honda K-Series and 30 years of the Toyota 2JZ engine. Additionally, the Opel Manta turns 50, the club, Opels at Carlisle, celebrates 25 years of attending the show AND the 15^th annual Opel Nationals meet, which rotates locations annually, has rotated its way to Carlisle for 2021!

Next up is the Carlisle Ford Nationals presented by Meguiar’s (June 4-6) and a quintet of unique, must-see displays. Given the star power of cars on stage and screen, Ford weekend welcomes its first-ever Comic-Car Con. In addition, the Pinto gets a 50^th celebration as does the Big Horse Mustangs (’71-’73). There’s also a Stroppe Reunion and the annual Ford Nationals Select display within Building Y.

From pony power to all things GM, the Carlisle GM Nationals (June 25-26) usher in summer and another handful of special displays. Comic-Car Con gets a nod at this event too and is supported by a 50^th celebration of the Vega and H-Platform. Further, there’s a GM Swaps display, a GM Nationals Showcase display and the annual Solid Lifter Showroom in Building Y.

Next comes the biggest all-MoPar themed event of its type, the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals (July 9-11). From a jam-packed showfield to a bulging swap meet, themes still help carry the event from year to year. In 2021, taking center stage will be a showcase of 1971 vehicles – all kinds of them. In addition, the “Dirty ‘Birds” get preferential treatment. What is a Dirty ‘Bird? Well, car lovers know what a Barn Find is, but as dirty birds go, this display will highlight derelict Superbirds…ones that aren’t shiny! Chrysler weekend gives guests at least three more great displays, one hosting Survivors, another tailored to the Demon, the other a spotlight of Old Skool paint! For the paint display, cars may have a coat 40 years in the (un) making or one that is retro, but new to your ride. Either way, it’ll be a trip back in time.

The MoPars give way to trucks of all types as the Carlisle Truck Nationals presented by A&A Auto Stores come to life August 6-8. Family fun is the theme during truck weekend and the featured display in Building T will showcase some of the truck enthusiasts interests of this event. Big Rigs, Vans, Cyclones, Typhoons, Sky High Rides and a show for those that like them low are just a few of the gatherings that will gives kids and parents alike the chance to see in real life the toys they’ve played with at home.

Specialty show season concludes with Corvettes at Carlisle presented by Top Flight Automotive (August 26-28). For three days, every generation of Corvette will be at Carlisle, flanked by generations of Corvette lovers. In 2021, the event honors 50 years of the 1971 Corvette, a nod to law enforcement by way of Chip’s Choice, the Solid Axle Corvette National Convention comes to town as does the NCCC and a 25^th reunion of the Grand Sport.

The 2021 Carlisle Events season concludes much the same way it started, with an automotive flea market event. Fall Carlisle (September 29-October 3) is the event that started it all in 1974 and for the 48^th time, vendors and enthusiasts alike converge on Carlisle to celebrate tradition, the car culture and an unmatched camaraderie that only those who are part of the experience can truly appreciate.

Each and every Featured Vehicle Display theme is accepting submissions now. All candidates for the displays are vetted by each event’s planner, with notifications coming in the weeks leading up to the event. If chosen, vehicles are then showcased not only front and center at the events, but online through social media posts, as part of event promotional materials and even within the event guide, handed out free to guests upon arrival at Carlisle.

Carlisle Events is COVID-19 compliant and follows current guidelines suggested by state officials as well as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). SPRING CARLISLE: Picture huge crowds, chilly weather, perhaps even snowflakes. But not this year, not COVID-2020. Instead, picture an event postponed twice and finally held on June 17-20. Picture a smaller crowd with fewer vendors. Picture a court hearing in nearby Harrisburg, PA where the Governor of Pennsylvania and his Department of Health threatened to shut down the event and send thousands of vendors and spectators home early.

COVID-19, a pandemic that has changed our lives forever. From the trip to the grocery store; to our family vacations; to our beloved collector car events- we’ve all been severely impacted by this terrible viral infection. And as we tend to represent the more senior part of the population, we get a larger dose of misery. All across the country, our favorite car and truck events have been cancelled or postponed until later in the summer and fall. The announcement that the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) and its Hershey Region have cancelled the 2020 Fall Meet swap meet and car corral, otherwise known as “Hershey”, seemed the final blow to the 2020 collector car and swap meet season.

As the spread of the virus slows and many states reopen their economy, the management of Carlisle (PA) Events, widely known as a venue for several popular antique and collector vehicle events, took the bold step to host the twice-delayed Spring Carlisle event from June 17-20. But this doesn’t mean they simply threw open the gates of the fabled 82-acre Carlisle Fairgrounds. In fact, a considerable amount of planning and preparation took place to protect the health of the vendors, spectators, employees, and the Carlisle community:

1. No one was admitted without a suitable face mask.
2. Employees at gathering points were protected with plastic sheeting and gloves.
3. Sanitation at restrooms and the food court, already a high standard at Carlisle, was further enhanced with hand sanitizer, additional cleaning and disinfection, and other measures.
4. The food court, probably the place with the closest gathering, had the tables spread apart to enhance social distancing.
5. In general, the event was structured to allow participants to maintain the comfortable distance we all now seek.

Despite being the first major east coast event, the numbers of vendors and spectators was considerably reduced. Those who were not comfortable being out in public simply remained home. The smaller crowd made the social distancing easier. The event was scheduled from Wednesday through Saturday, with everyone home for Father’s Day.

As the gates opened on Wednesday, spectators handed their payment to Carlisle employees wearing masks. Hand sanitizer stations were just inside the gate, as if to remind visitors that personal hygiene and safety were not simply words on a page. Many spectators removed their mask as the temperatures increased; but social distancing was evident. Public health experts are now discounting the threat from surface contact; and stressing that transmission requires close face to face contact. With 82 acres and large vendor spaces, this threat has been minimized.

Wednesday afternoon a hearing convened in Harrisburg, the State Capitol, to decide the fate of Spring Carlisle 2020. Commonwealth Court Judge Anne E. Covey was impressed by the arguments put forth by the Carlisle Events legal team. The health and safety preparations and the fact that the business was primarily conducted outdoors indicated the activity was proper under the requirements set forth by the Department of Health. By Friday, the DOH and Carlisle Events had agreed to a mutual statement whereby the State would assist Carlisle in keeping their events as safe as possible. Over the next few days, the vendor count and spectator attendance was more typical for the event. There were empty spaces; but most vendors reported brisk sales, and the spectators seemed happy to be enjoying their passion.

In the days following the event, the PA public health officials have not reported any spike in infection in Carlisle or the surrounding Cumberland County area. Of course, these numbers are watched closely. The next Carlisle events are scheduled over the months of July to October; and the enhanced health and safety measures will remain in place. The Hershey Region and the AACA management are working with the Hershey Entertainment and Recreation Company (HERCO) to possibly hold a Saturday (only) car show at Hersheypark on October 10, 2020. The week preceding this will see Carlisle host their annual Fall Carlisle event. There was plenty of discussion at Spring Carlisle about the possibility that Fall Carlisle could act as a “proxy” for the Hershey swap meet. If the virus remains in decline, the 46 anniversary of “Post-War ‘74” (the first Carlisle event in 1974) could be a memorable event.
