Cartersville, GA – The Savoy Automobile Museum announced the opening of its latest temporary exhibit, Corvette: The Early Years. Following a positive debut at General Motors’ 1953 Motorama show in New York City, the Chevrolet Corvette rushed into production. Widely recognized as “America’s Sports Car,” this fiberglass-bodied, two-door, two-seater filled the void of a domestically built roadster. Boasting eight generations of manufactured success, the Corvette has become an American icon. In this exhibition, we are focusing on the early years, showcasing a variety of special examples from the first three generations: C1 (1953-1962), C2 (1963-1967), and C3 (1968-1982). The exhibit is on display now through May 31, 2026.

London, UK – The London Concours announced that June’s show will celebrate the past 70 years of one of the most significant and iconic automotive creations of all: the Chevrolet Corvette. Running from June 4th – 6th at the Honourable Artillery Company in the heart of the city, the event will gather ten models from throughout the Corvette’s illustrious history – from the seminal C1 of the 1950s right through to the cutting-edge, mid-engined C8 supercar of today. Presented in partnership with the Classic Corvette Club UK and Classic and Sports Car, the display will chart the progression of this defining model over the decades, offering fascinating snapshots of America and its automotive industry in the process.

The display will kick-off with the first-generation of Corvette, introduced in 1953, which was devised by General Motors to tap into America’s enthusiasm for European sports cars in the post-war years. Known as the ‘C1’, it featured a sleek body designed by Harvey Earl; it was the archetypal two-seater sports car, embodying ‘50s American optimism. The C1 was offered with a range of engines over the course of its nine-year production run, from a straight-six in the base car, up to a 5.4-litre 300+bhp V8. The motors could be mated either to a 2-speed ‘Powerglide’ auto, or a 3 or 4-speed manual box. As the first mass-produced American sports car, the C1 set the foundations for the enduring Corvette legacy and remains a landmark piece of industrial design.

The second-generation Corvette, more widely known as the ‘Sting Ray’, arrived on the scene in 1963. Designed by Larry Shinoda, who was also responsible for the Ford Mustang ‘Boss’ 302, the C2 became an instant classic. With its futuristic lines and split-rear window, it was an American sports car for the space age. Quite literally, in fact; from the ‘60s to ‘70s GM had an arrangement with NASA which saw legendary astronauts – the likes of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin – run top of the range, fire-breathing ‘vettes as company cars.

Under the long bonnet, the Sting Ray housed a variety of V8 engines, from the iconic small-block 327 to the mighty, 7.0-litre, 427 cubic inch monster – ideal for astronauts accustomed to rocket thrusters. Available as a convertible and a coupe, it also became a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack, with the rumbling, often side-piped Sting Ray taking the fight to European machines like the Jaguar E-Type at circuits around the world.

Also on show will be the equally distinctive C3 Corvette, which was introduced in 1968. While the C2 reflected the automotive and design landscape of the ‘60s, the C3, with its more curvaceous body and dramatic pop-up headlights, vibrantly reflected the more extravagant style of the 1970s. Over its 14-year production run, the C3 underwent various refinements; remarkably 21 different powerplants had been offered by the time production ceased in 1982, from more refined small block V8s to the decidedly less civilised, thunderous big-blocks versions. A customer in the early ‘70s could spec their C3 to have 450bhp, nearly 100bhp more than a contemporary Ferrari 512BB; a blue-collar American performance hero.

If the C3 embodied the ‘70s, then the C4, unveiled in 1984, was very much a machine of the 1980s. It embraced cutting-edge technology and aerodynamic design of the time, with a futuristic, digital dashboard, and an all-new chassis, using composite body panels to keep weight down. Under the skin the C4 was a marked step on from its predecessors, ditching the dated body-on-frame construction, while a six-speed manual gearbox was offered for the first time.

June’s show will also feature the C5, introduced in 1997, which modernized things further and became a great hit with performance car fans. The C5 featured the 345bhp LS1 5.7-litre V8 at its core, and, thanks to a lightweight structure, and a much more refined suspension system, it took all-round performance and handling to a new level. With high-tech magnetorheological dampers and a top speed of over 175mph, the driving experience was now comparable to much more expensive European competitors.

The C7, introduced in 2014, further evolved the Corvette, bringing sharper lines, more advanced materials, and yet more powerful engines. Generally, it stuck to the familiar recipe that had served the Corvette well for over 60 years – a large engine at the front nestled under a long bonnet, sending power to the rear wheels. Thanks to sophisticated technology, including the option of a swift-shifting 8-speed automatic ‘box, the C7 could go toe to toe with more exotic machinery; even in base form it was capable of hitting 60mph from rest in just 3.7 seconds, while at the top of the tree, the supercharged 755hp ZR1 could reach a hypercar troubling 215mph.

The Corvette retrospective will be rounded off by the latest-generation C8, introduced in 2020. The current ‘vette represented a revolution for the model chiefly on account of its shift to a mid-engined layout. This move enhanced both balance and agility – deploying the multi-cylinder, mid-engined recipe that has for so long been the preserve of blue-blooded European exotica, marking the start of an exciting new chapter in the history of this true automotive icon.

This is just one part of this summer’s event, which will assemble some 80 machines – from classics to modern hypercars – in an oasis of green in the heart of the city of London. Stay tuned for further class announcements in the weeks and months ahead as we approach the anticipated 8th edition of London Concours.

Beyond the cars, guests to the Honorary Artillery Company will be treated to a decadent range of food and drink options – including the all-day Club Concours hospitality experience, engaging live stage discussions, as well as a carefully selected line-up of luxury brands and boutiques. London Concours 2024 is set to be another unforgettable occasion of automotive indulgence.

About Thorough Events and the London Concours: The London Concours is organized by Thorough Events, the team behind the Concours of Elegance. First hosted in 2012 at Windsor Castle, the Concours of Elegance set a new global benchmark for a classic car concours, winning prestigious awards in the process; unheard of for a ‘start-up’ event in its first year. Thorough Events created the London Concours in June 2017 as an automotive garden party in the heart of the City of London, gathering a collection of rare and exceptional performance cars into one of London’s most incredible venues. In 2018, the Concours of Elegance was named as Best Consumer Show and in 2019 it was named Motoring Spectacle of the Year by the Royal Automobile Club.
St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance – Delahay is the featured Marque of the 16th Annual St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance on Chesapeake Bay, with Bentley Motors as this year’s presenting sponsor. This year Corvette’s 70th anniversary is being celebrated with an invitational class of racing Corvettes sponsored by Cunningham Automotive.

The September 22-24 event takes place at the Kent Island Yacht Club on the Kent Narrows and includes pre- and post-war classes of automobiles and a selection of Chesapeake Bay yachts and antique boats. Sunday, September 24 is set aside for spectators and offers a day of grand classic motoring, lively music, and Eastern Shore cuisine and libations in a casually elegant waterfront setting.

“The Delahaye’s aerodynamic curves and lines embrace elegance like no other,” says St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance Chairman Luke L. Phipps. “The world-renowned Audrain Auto Museum of Newport is entering a 1951 Delahaye, just one week before their own prestigious Concours & Motor Week. We feel extremely honored by their participation.”

Phipps says the 1951 Delahaye 135M remains in remarkable overall condition, including its very attractive two-tone gray finish, supple red leather interior with exquisite, burled wood trim, and whitewall tires.

The Delahaye’s 135, introduced in Paris in 1935, was a rare model that straddled both the pre-war and post-war eras. It boasted a brand-new chassis with the same 3.6-liter, six-cylinder engine first seen in the earlier Type 138, and it proved to be a remarkable automobile upon its release. The 135 proved to more than hold its own in competition, as it swept the top six places at Marseilles in 1936. In the following years, leading up to the beginning of the Second World War, the 135 further cemented its reputation, taking second place overall at Le Mans in 1937 and placing first, second, and fourth the following year.

“Even today, six decades after the final Delahaye was produced, the famous 135 series cars remain very highly regarded as some of the most compelling French automobiles ever produced,” Phipps says.

Hickory Corners, Mich. – The world’s premiere indoor muscle car show, and one of the world’s finest auto museums, have forged a partnership that will bring a summertime celebration of American Muscle to the Michigan countryside. The MCACN Muscle Car Meet Up on the lawns of the Gilmore Car Museum, in Hickory Corners, Michigan, promises to be a “fun & casual midsummer meet up” and driving event for muscle and high-performance car owners. Intentionally, the show will not include rigorous and formal points-based judging, but instead “favorite pick” awards by both MCACN and Gilmore staff, a swap meet, live rock band, curated backroads driving tour routes, a live remote radio broadcast, and more.

The MCACN Muscle Car Meet Up will showcase classic American muscle cars from the 1960s and 70s, but is open to modern muscle like today’s high-performance Chevrolet Camaros, Ford Mustangs, and Dodge Challengers. Showcar registration will be $20, and will include vehicle entry, plus admission for its driver and one passenger. As a fundraising effort, 100% of the event’s showcar registration funds will be directed to construction of the planned midcentury-modern 1960s dealership building on the Gilmore campus, to house its new standalone Muscle Car Museum.

The central showfield of the Gilmore Car Museum campus will be reserved for a MCACN exhibit, and an exclusive “outdoor feature display space” for only MCACN-invited special and notable muscle cars, and their owners. It should serve as a unique and picturesque display opportunity on the Gilmore’s green lawns, surrounded by its towering red barns and classic 1941 diner.

Spectator access to the MCACN Muscle Car Meet Up will be included in standard daily admission to the museum on Saturday, June 25th ($16 Adults/Seniors; $11 Youth Ages 11-17; FREE Children Ages 10 and under; FREE Active Military).

“For muscle car owners, I can’t imagine a better spot for a summertime drive and outdoor car show than the beautiful Michigan countryside and spectacular Gilmore Car Museum – located midway between Chicago and Detroit,” said Bob Ashton, Managing Member of MCACN. “Our Gilmore community of car enthusiasts will be thrilled about this new collaboration, and deeply appreciative of MCACN’s commitment to help us fundraise to build our new Muscle Car Museum,” added Josh Russell, Executive Director of the Gilmore Car Museum.

MCACN Muscle Car Meet Up activities will run from 9am – 4pm ET on Saturday, June 25th, 2022. On that same day, general museum hours of operation run from 9am – 6pm ET.

Carlisle, PA – The world’s “largest” all Corvette themed weekend returns August 26-28, 2021 to the Carlisle PA Fairgrounds and this year, everyone is looking forward to simply being at Carlisle. Corvettes at Carlisle presented by Top Flight Automotive has been hosting Corvettes and Corvette lovers since 1982, but after a tumultuous 2020, so many are eager to come to Carlisle to simply celebrate the culture with their car, their friends and the community. Not only does this year’s event offer that, it offers great displays, guests, charitable ventures and a chance to bring the cars into downtown Carlisle once more.

Three days long and starting on August 26, Corvettes at Carlisle hosts the C8 and every other generation of Corvette on the grounds. Special features for 2021 include those focused on the Callaway AeroBody Corvette, a 50-year look back at 1971 Corvettes, a 25th anniversary of the Grand Sport Corvette, the Solid Axle Corvette Club National Convention, NCRS Gallery Display and the annual Chip’s Choice featured vehicle display.

As Chip’s Choice goes, the theme for 2021 is a salute to law enforcement. The hand-picked gallery brings together about a dozen Corvettes that are owned, driven, shown or otherwise cared for by members of the law enforcement community. In addition, there will be an on-site law enforcement parade, a stage presentation which welcomes not only Corvette enthusiasts in law enforcement, but local officers from the surrounding counties and of course the Chip’s Choice cars.

Speaking of parades, Carlisle Events and the Downtown Carlisle Association are excited to share that the annual Corvette parade and street party returns on Saturday, August 28. Cars will roll from the fairgrounds around 7 p.m. and cruise into the downtown area before parking for owners and community members to mix and mingle as the sun sets on the show.

Additional elements of Corvettes at Carlisle include a large swap meet and a Corvette centric car corral, perfect for parts or car shopping, the chance to support the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation, giveaways, parts installs and FREE seminars.

As giveaways go, the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation has partnered with the Lancaster County Corvette Club to raffle off a 2021 C8 Corvette with proceeds benefitting CMAF and Claire House. Tickets are just $125 each and the winning number will be drawn in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Lottery’s Pick 3 (000-999) on Saturday, August 28. Another C8 at Carlisle will be awarded later in the year, as the CMAF supports its second annual Corvette Contest. This C8 is a 60th Anniversary tribute to the legendary 1960 #3 Cunningham Corvette that won its class in the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France. The CMAF also sees support on August 27 by way of its annual Corvettes for Chip dinner, held at the neighboring Carlisle Expo Center.

Bob Smith Collection – August 2-3 Miles, IA

By Yvette VanDerBrink

There are elements of chemistry that are involved with the operation of tractors, gas engines and collector cars. The correct gas ratios, conditions that cause condensation and vapor locking, and even correct temps are all factors in creating power in engines. But for Bob Smith, his biggest chemistry experiment was in high school. In a high school chemistry class, he found more than science with his lab partner. He found a different kind of chemistry that was far more explosive. It was in that class that the he found his future wife Jean. They started dating and soon they both went to college. Bob went to University of Iowa and Jean went to nursing school. They had strict rules in those days and they couldn’t get married until they both graduated. After graduation they started their lives in Clinton, Iowa. Bob was a plant manager with Purina and Jean was a nurse. It wasn’t long before a daughter entered their lives.

Bob always had a fascination with the “chemistry” and mechanics of old tractors and gas engines. When they moved to a 25-acre acreage outside Clinton, IA Bob now had all the room to start his hobby. In 1979, he started going to auctions, shows, and learning the antique engine and tractor hobby. He started small, but soon started filling up the acreage they settled on.

Always entrepreneurs, Bob and Jean started a rental business with apartments and residential homes, all while building Bob’s collection. Life was good and he continued to build his collection. The love of engines and machines of the past led him to an association with the threshing shows in Miles, IA and also at the Jackson County Fair.

With the rental endeavor, Bob was a Jack-of-all-trades and the business was a family affair. He did the maintenance and repairs while Jean pitched in with painting and readying the inside for new renters. Soon their rental business grew to several apartment buildings and approx. 30 rental homes. With the growing business came an assortment of properties that allowed Bob to stash more of his treasured engines and tractors. He started to show signs of health problems, but had everyone convinced he was going to live to be 100.

Sadly, COPD started to take its toll. It was becoming more difficult to make it out to the auctions with an oxygen tank, but Bob still made the rounds buying engines and tractors. In the last few years, his health progressively began to fail. Even with his failing health Bob continued to work and bought two tractors right before he died. Unfortunately, he never got to drive the Allis Chalmers 200 and Rumley Oil Pull that he hauled home from the auction. Bob had always wanted a Steam Traction Tractor of his own, and finally gained the Case Project that is still in the shop where he had just got done putting in new flues.

His wife Jean now has the task of selling the rentals, tractors, and engines in the vast collection with the help of many of Bob’s dear friends. This massive move will take place in July for the auction and everything will be moved to the threshing grounds in Miles, Iowa for the auction on August 3rd &4th, 2019. It will be 2 big days filled with selling the almost 109 antique tractors, approx. 150 Stationary gas engines, Signs and memorabilia, along with many collector cars.
